Egypt pledges unconditional backing for Saudi Arabia following Houthi assaults.

Egypt has expressed its readiness to assist Saudi Arabia amidst escalating Houthi aggression, according to Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty. This statement highlights Egypt’s commitment to regional stability and security.

Support for Saudi Arabia Amid Escalating Threats

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Abdelatty confirmed that Egypt is willing to provide various forms of support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in response to the intensifying Houthi attacks. He stated, “Whatever is being asked by the Saudis, of course we will respond.” Such declarations come at a critical time as the Houthi forces have increased their missile and drone assaults against Saudi facilities, including airports. The heightened aggression has prompted regional allies to discuss collective defense measures.

Mecca Joint Defense Agreement Considerations

Abdelatty revealed that Egypt is strongly contemplating joining the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, which currently includes Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan. Signed on August 7, the pact stipulates that an armed attack against any member country will be perceived as an attack against all. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has clarified that this agreement is purely defensive and does not target any specific nation. Egypt’s potential involvement underscores its strategic interest in maintaining regional security and further solidifying alliances with neighboring countries.

Collective Defense Commitments

On October 5, the alliance reaffirmed its commitment to immediate and collective defense actions following a rise in Houthi assaults. This collective agreement facilitates the rapid deployment of military resources and capabilities to Saudi Arabia. The most recent remarks from Abdelatty coincide with a surge in missile strikes, including a devastating attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh that resulted in numerous casualties. In light of these events, a united front has emerged from Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia, issuing a joint statement condemning the Houthi actions and reiterating support for measures to protect Saudi territory.

Regional Security Concerns

Egypt has asserted that the national security of Egypt and Saudi Arabia are intertwined, emphasizing that the continued assaults by the Houthis threaten to escalate regional tensions further. The disturbances in Yemen, which have been ongoing since the Houthis took control of the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014, have triggered international response, including a Saudi-led coalition intervening in support of Yemen’s legitimate government. This prolonged conflict has far-reaching implications not only for the involved countries but for the stability of the entire region.

As the situation evolves, Egypt’s involvement in the defense of Saudi Arabia may play an essential role in shaping the future landscape of Middle Eastern diplomacy and security. The collaboration between these nations is likely crucial for resisting external threats and ensuring that regional stability is maintained in the face of ongoing challenges. With Egypt open to military support and alliances, the prospect of a united defense mechanism against threats like those from the Houthis could reshape alliances in the region, forming a more cohesive strategy for collective security.
