Kurdistan Region Sends 2,000 MW of Electricity to Other Areas of Iraq

Iraq is known for its vast energy potential, yet much of it remains untapped. Recently, during a discussion panel at the MERI Forum, Aziz Ahmad, who serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, shed light on the electricity generation capabilities of the region. He emphasized the importance of maximizing this resource, as the Kurdistan Region already enjoys a unique position with its ability to provide consistent electricity.

Kurdistan’s Energy Capacity

Ahmad revealed that the Kurdistan Region possesses the ability to generate 8,000 megawatts of electricity. Remarkably, the region is currently utilizing only half of this capacity, yet it still manages to deliver 24-hour electricity to its residents. In addition to supplying power locally, the region also exports an extra 2,000 megawatts to other areas of Iraq. This indicates that with better resource management, the region could significantly bolster its contributions to national energy requirements.

Sharing Solutions with Baghdad

According to Ahmad, Iraq as a whole has a potential electricity generation capacity of 35,000 megawatts, which is sufficient for providing uninterrupted power across the nation. He stressed that with strategic planning and appropriate measures, it is possible for Iraq to achieve a continuous electricity supply. Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has consistently extended offers of collaboration to the Iraqi federal government to help realize this vision. However, these proposals have met with resistance, as Baghdad has shown little interest in working towards a unified energy strategy.

The Runaki Project: A Game-Changer

In an effort to enhance electricity access, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has launched the Runaki project. This pivotal initiative aims to deliver affordable and continuous electricity to homes and businesses by the end of 2026. Under Barzani’s direction, this project seeks to overhaul the region’s electricity infrastructure, significantly lessening dependency on inefficient diesel generators, while simultaneously lowering utility costs for locals and enterprises.

Expanding Coverage and Reliability

The impact of the Runaki initiative has already been significant, broadening its coverage to serve approximately 5.5 million residents in the Kurdistan Region. The KRG positions Runaki as a benchmark for improving electricity services, focusing on providing a dependable power supply and gradually reducing reliance on private, neighborhood generators. As the region continues to evolve, the success of the Runaki project could serve as a blueprint for applicable solutions to energy challenges faced not only within the Kurdistan Region but also throughout the entire country.

Through these advancements, the Kurdistan Region is on a path towards greater energy independence and stability, setting an example for the rest of Iraq. As discussions continue and initiatives like Runaki unfold, there is hope that cooperation, innovation, and planning will ultimately lead to a comprehensive solution for Iraq’s electricity challenges.
