Healthcare Prioritizing Longevity Shines at the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit

The aging population presents significant challenges globally, making it a focal point for discussions among policymakers and healthcare leaders at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit. This summit is dedicated to exploring how proactive measures in prediction and prevention can enhance the quality of life for the elderly, promoting the idea that everyone should enjoy their later years in good health.

UAE’s Leadership in Healthcare Innovation

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is emerging as a frontrunner in innovative healthcare policies. Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, the Executive Director of the Health Life Science Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, views the summit as an invaluable platform to showcase real-time advancements in these policies. “At the core of our initiatives is precision medicine,” she explains. According to Al Mannaei, improving overall health hinges on understanding individual risks through genomic information, biomarkers, and lifestyle choices, allowing for early interventions.

As the flagship event of the Future Health platform, the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit aims to drive global cooperation and innovation in health sectors year-round. The summit’s mission is to forge a path toward a healthier future by fusing innovation with collaboration to promote longevity and health for all.

Confronting the Challenge of Aging Populations

With the World Health Organization projecting that by 2050, over 2 billion people will be over 60, the summit underscores the urgency of addressing the needs of aging populations. This statistic has intensified the focus on crafting healthcare systems that prioritize not just longevity but also the quality of life during those additional years. “Every healthcare system faces the question: will those added years be healthy years?” Al Mannaei emphasizes the necessity of investing in preventative measures and predictive strategies to address this concern. Her approach includes a four-phase model: sensing through genomics and data, predicting risks before symptoms arise, preventing health issues with early interventions, and personalizing care plans.

Innovative Health Programs in Abu Dhabi

One of the hallmark achievements in Abu Dhabi’s health landscape is the Emirati Genome Programme (EGP), initiated in 2019. This ambitious project aims to catalog the genetic makeup of Emiratis, and over 800,000 genetic records have already been compiled. Al Mannaei notes that knowledge of individual genetics paves the way for “precision prevention,” allowing for targeted interventions based on genetic predispositions.

Another pivotal initiative is Malaffi, the region’s first health information exchange, launched in 2019 under the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi. With a network that encompasses more than 3,000 healthcare facilities and over 4 billion patient records, Malaffi ensures that clinicians have secure access to comprehensive health histories, which enhances patient safety and facilitates better clinical decision-making.

A Vision for a Healthier Future

In Abu Dhabi, various facets of healthcare—including policy, technology, and investment—coalesce around a unified vision. By constructing the Emirati Genome Programme, authorities have ensured that governance, data, infrastructure, and partnerships develop concurrently. This integrated approach accelerates the transition from research to application in healthcare, fostering a nimble economic landscape.

Looking ahead, Dr. Al Mannaei envisions Abu Dhabi as a model for successful longevity-focused healthcare systems. She aims for it to be recognized globally as a blueprint on how health systems can effectively sense, predict, prevent, and personalize care, ultimately helping individuals live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. The ongoing efforts in Abu Dhabi serve as a promising example of how innovation and policy can work in harmony to address the urgent needs of an aging world.
