Iraq Moves Forward with Sadr City Development Near Baghdad — TradingView News

Iraq is moving forward with the development of the Sadr City project, located near Baghdad. Despite facing land disputes with certain property owners, the Baghdad Municipality has confirmed that progress is being made.

Infrastructure Development for Housing Units

The Sadr City initiative includes the construction of infrastructure for 11,000 residential units in a new area labeled New Sadr City. Khaldoun Abbas, the project director, announced that the construction is currently in the hands of a Chinese contractor. Abbas reported that significant work is already underway on essential infrastructure components, including the comprehensive construction of the sewage system and related networks.

The Role of Shandong Construction Company

In 2022, China’s Shandong Construction Company secured the contract for the first phase of a larger project aimed at developing a city with 60,000 homes. The area where this initiative is taking place was previously known as Saddam City, after the former leader Saddam Hussein. The first phase alone, involving the construction of 11,000 homes, is projected to accommodate over 400,000 residents.

Aligning with Strategic Agreements

Officials have noted that this deal with Shandong Construction aligns with a significant oil-for-projects agreement established between Iraq and China in 2019. This partnership emphasizes Iraq’s commitment to expanding its housing infrastructure while utilizing international partnerships to facilitate growth.

In conclusion, despite existing land disputes, the Sadr City project is an ambitious undertaking aimed at addressing housing shortages and developing vital infrastructure. As the first phase progresses, the collaboration with international contractors like Shandong Construction highlights Iraq’s strategic approach to modernizing living conditions for its citizens.
