Baghdad’s oil sector is making strides as the state-owned Iraqi Drilling Company (IDC) commenced a significant maintenance project on well ZB-510 in the Zubair oilfield, located in the southern Basra province. This move is essential for increasing operational efficiency and boosting Iraq’s oil output.
Maintenance Operations Begin at Zubair Oilfield
According to statements from the IDC, the maintenance work on well ZB-510 utilizes the IDC-47 workover rig, resuming repairs after a four-month hiatus. Such workover procedures are crucial technical interventions aimed at addressing specific issues and rehabilitating oil wells. By focusing on the technical conditions and approved rehabilitation programs, IDC intends to bring well ZB-510 back to productive status.
Enhancing Oil Production Capabilities
In July, the IDC marked a significant milestone by completing the drilling of a new deviated oil well in the Zubair oilfield. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Oil’s overarching goal to increase oil production and enhance the operational efficiency of Iraq’s oilfields. The newly drilled well extends to a depth of 3,846 meters with a notable inclination of 20 degrees, designed to stabilize production levels further and bolster the capabilities of the Zubair oilfield.
Encompassing vast reserves, the Zubair oilfield is officially estimated to contain over four billion barrels of recoverable crude oil. Unofficial assessments suggest that with the application of modern extraction technologies, these reserves could potentially rise to around five billion barrels. This underscores the importance of continuous improvements and technological advancements in maximizing Iraq’s natural resources.
Strategic Goals for Sustainable Energy Production
To support the Ministry of Oil’s initiatives in reducing gas flaring and generating electrical power, the Zubair oilfield has recorded significant achievements in the recovery of associated gas, reaching a rate of 147 million cubic feet daily. This not only contributes to cleaner energy practices but also enhances the economic viability of operations.
The Zubair oilfield, operated by Italy’s Eni, is vital for the Iraqi economy. Current projections indicate that production can sustain itself until the field reaches its economic limit in 2047. Eni and its partners are working towards elevating the oilfield’s output capacity to 700,000 barrels per day, with an ambitious long-term goal of reaching 850,000 barrels per day.
Currently, with a daily output of around 450,000 barrels, the Zubair oilfield represents approximately nine percent of Iraq’s total oil production. As IDC continues to implement critical maintenance and drilling projects, the focus remains on not only stabilizing production but also enhancing the overall output capacity, further positioning Iraq as a key player in the global oil market.
