Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently called for immediate action concerning the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly urging Israel to cease its controversial settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. He made these statements during his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Baku, Azerbaijan, coinciding with the seventh CICA summit. Wang also highlighted the urgency of fully reopening access to the Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian situation remains dire.
Urgent Humanitarian Needs in Gaza
Wang expressed grave concerns about the humanitarian crisis facing the two million residents of Gaza. He emphasized that it is imperative to restore full access to the territory to avert a worsening catastrophe. The Chinese Foreign Minister pointed out that any delay in addressing the humanitarian needs will exacerbate the plight of civilians. The conflict has significantly affected lives, and immediate intervention is crucial to ensure that the population receives essential aid and support.
The Palestinian Issue: Core of the Conflict
According to Wang, the Palestinian issue is central to understanding the broader Middle East conflict. He articulated that both Israelis and Palestinians possess the inherent right to peaceful coexistence and the establishment of independent states. He reiterated China’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution as the viable pathway toward achieving lasting peace. Wang called for steadfast dedication to this approach, stating that it is crucial for realizing the peace that both sides have long sought.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the international community should not overlook the urgency surrounding the Palestinian plight. Wang emphasized the necessity of addressing the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people while advocating for their cause on global platforms. He underlined that unless a fair resolution to the Palestinian question is achieved, lasting peace in the region remains elusive.
China’s Commitment to International Justice
In a separate meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, Wang reiterated China’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, stressing the importance of restoring their legitimate national rights. He asserted that the ongoing crisis should not be marginalized, especially in a world where humanitarian issues are often overshadowed by geopolitical interests.
Wang has also highlighted the destructive impact of the current conflict, which has reportedly led to more than 74,000 Palestinian casualties and the destruction of 90% of Gaza’s infrastructure since the onset of Israel’s military offensive in October 2023. He underscored that these realities need to be acknowledged and addressed by the global community to work toward genuine justice and stability.
China’s diplomatic efforts reflect a broader commitment to advocating for the oppressed and marginalized, and Wang’s remarks aim to galvanize international support for a peaceful resolution to one of the most pressing humanitarian crises of our time.
