Shafaq News: Iraq Logs Almost 10,000 TIR Truck Trips

The international transport sector is witnessing a remarkable transformation in Iraq, primarily attributed to its recent integration into the TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers) transit system. This new system stands to bolster trade by streamlining customs processes, allowing for a more efficient flow of goods across borders.

Growth of TIR Transit in Iraq

As reported by the Iraqi Transport Ministry, nearly 10,000 truck journeys have been made under the TIR system. This achievement highlights a significant milestone in the nation’s logistics and transportation landscape. Murtadha Karim Al-Shahmani, the Director General of the General Company for Land Transportation, confirmed that an Iraqi truck successfully entered Turkey with cargo, marking a pivotal development in cross-border trade. This specific truck carried goods from Mardin and was destined for Amman, Jordan, passing through Iraq.

Al-Shahmani noted that the initial TIR journey undertaken two months prior has led to a steep increase in transport activity. The surge in TIR movements since June showcases the growing demand for Iraqi transport services and reinforces the country’s central role as a commercial hub connecting the East and West.

Benefits of the TIR System

The TIR framework, supported by the United Nations, allows for the transit of goods across various countries under a single customs guarantee. This system significantly cuts down on the paperwork typically required for international shipments, while also minimizing delays due to customs inspections. Joining the TIR system represents a monumental step for Iraq and underscores the country’s commitment to improving its trade infrastructure.

Iraq’s participation in the TIR system was made possible through collaboration with the International Road Transport Union (IRU). This partnership aims to facilitate smoother and quicker cross-border transport, making it easier for businesses to operate on an international scale.

Expanding Transport Agreements

In addition to joining the TIR system, the Transport Ministry has also formalized agreements with several neighboring countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Iran, and Turkey. These agreements are crucial for expanding Iraq’s transport capabilities and creating a robust trade network. Furthermore, nations such as Armenia and Poland, along with various Gulf states, are in discussions to establish similar transport arrangements rooted in Iraqi logistics.

The evolving landscape of Iraq’s transport system signifies a new era that is not only beneficial for local businesses but also attractive for international partners looking to engage in trade through Iraq. The TIR system plays a central role in promoting this connectivity, ensuring that Iraq can effectively serve its position as a key transit corridor.

In summary, with nearly 10,000 truck journeys completed and significant international agreements in place, Iraq is poised to thrive as a vital link in the global supply chain. The adoption of the TIR system stands as a testament to the country’s dedication to modernizing its transport framework and enhancing trade opportunities. As Iraq continues to embrace these changes, it is likely to attract more business ventures and trade partnerships, reinforcing its importance on the world stage.
