Hoengseong Hanwoo Beef Expands into Qatar as Part of Its Third Halal Market Initiative

Hoengseong Hanwoo, a distinguished brand of Korean beef, is making its debut in Qatar, following its successful entries into markets in Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates. This expansion is part of a broader initiative aimed at establishing “HANWOO” as a recognized brand for Korean beef and enhancing the international reputation of Korean cuisine.

The Launch of Hoengseong Hanwoo in Qatar

The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) recently organized an event in Doha to celebrate the initial shipment of Hoengseong Hanwoo beef, which occurred on November 18. This event was conducted in collaboration with the South Korean government, local agricultural bodies, and the South Korean embassy in Qatar. It saw participation from around 30 distinguished guests, including the South Korean Ambassador to Qatar, Hong Ji-pyo, and officials from Qatar’s health ministry. The launch signals a significant step in marketing premium Korean beef within the Gulf region.

Market Demand and Growth Potential

In Qatar, the landscape for red meat imports is promising. With over 80% of its red meat sourced from abroad, the market provides fertile ground for growth. Recent statistics indicate a notable increase in beef imports, which have surged from $97 million in 2019 to an anticipated $180 million by 2024. The demand for high-quality meat is being spurred on by affluent consumers and an upscale dining scene driven by luxury hotels and restaurants. This trend bodes well for the introduction of premium brands like Hoengseong Hanwoo.

Overcoming Challenges to Enter the Market

Efforts to introduce Hoengseong Hanwoo in Qatar faced several challenges, particularly regarding import regulations. South Korea had been restricted from exporting beef to Qatar due to its vaccination protocols against foot-and-mouth disease. Together with the South Korean embassy, KOTRA engaged with Qatar’s food safety department to navigate these regulations. Their efforts resulted in South Korea being added to Qatar’s list of approved countries for exporting chilled and frozen boneless beef. The recent shipment of 80.8 kilograms of Hanwoo beef marks the successful culmination of their negotiations.

Future Initiatives for Brand Promotion

Looking ahead, KOTRA is planning various promotional activities to boost awareness of Hoengseong Korean beef within the Qatari market. From November 22 to 24, they will host the Korean Shopping Festival 2026, partnering with major retail chains like Carrefour and Monoprix. Additionally, they aim to engage consumers through a stamp-collecting campaign at Korean restaurants and grocery stores, offering rewards such as exclusive tastings of Hoengseong Hanwoo beef. This hands-on approach is expected to cultivate a loyal customer base and promote the brand effectively.

In summary, the introduction of Hoengseong Hanwoo beef into Qatar represents a strategic move in establishing Korean premium meat on the global stage. With an increasing demand for high-quality meat products in the region, combined with robust promotional initiatives from KOTRA, the future looks promising for Hoengseong Hanwoo as it seeks to carve a niche in Qatar’s competitive food landscape.
