Eni Initiative Enhances Egypt’s Domestic Gas Output

Eni, the Italian energy giant, has commenced operational activities at its Meleiha Phase 2 project within Egypt’s Western Desert. This advancement is poised to bolster the nation’s capacity for gas processing, aligning with Egypt’s ongoing energy initiatives.

Collaboration and Project Overview

The Meleiha Phase 2 project is a collaborative effort between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). This initiative aims to establish a new gas hub within the consolidated Meleiha concession. In June 2021, a significant agreement was signed, merging the Meleiha and Meleiha Deep concessions with Russian energy firm Lukoil. This strategic merger not only streamlines operations but also enhances productivity in the region.

Impact on Domestic Gas Production

The inauguration of Phase 2 is set to elevate domestic gas output significantly. With a processing capability of up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas daily, the new facility is crucial for meeting the increasing energy demands in Egypt. Additionally, the project includes the development of new wells and a dedicated gas export pipeline, which will facilitate faster resource monetization. This integration with the existing gas infrastructure will undoubtedly lead to more efficient operations and enhanced energy availability in the market.

Future Exploration and Investments

In December 2025, Egypt launched an extensive seismic survey aimed at uncovering oil and gas deposits across nearly 10% of the country’s territory. The government has set ambitious goals, planning to drill 101 oil and gas wells by year-end as part of a broader $5.7 billion investment approved for drilling 480 wells over the next five years. This commitment reflects Egypt’s determination to maximize its natural resources and to reinforce its position as a significant player in the energy sector.

Eni’s operational output was substantial, with the company producing approximately 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on an equity basis in 2025. This robust output underscores the importance of collaborative ventures in the energy landscape, particularly in regions rich with natural resources like Egypt. As Eni and EGPC continue to work together, the advancements from the Meleiha Phase 2 project promise to invigorate both the local economy and energy capabilities.
