Turkey Aims for Billion in Tourism Revenue by 2027, Aspires to Join the Global Top 5

Türkiye is setting ambitious goals for its tourism sector as it aims to generate $70 billion in revenue by 2027. This strategy is part of a broader initiative to establish Türkiye as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. With an increased budget allocation of $244.5 million for tourism in the upcoming year, the country is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the global tourism market.

Increased Budget for Tourism in Türkiye

The Turkish government has upped its tourism budget significantly from $188.4 million this year to $244.5 million in the 2027 central government budget draft. This financial commitment highlights the country’s determination to revitalize its tourism sector, which has already shown signs of exponential growth. Alongside the financial boost, Türkiye anticipates a revenue spike—forecasting $70 billion in 2027, $73.5 billion in 2028, and $78.5 billion by 2029. This trajectory not only signals the government’s confidence in future tourism but also aims to enhance Türkiye’s global standing in the sector.

Despite some setbacks in 2026, where the initial revenue target was scaled back from $68 billion to $65 billion due to geopolitical tensions, Türkiye has made impressive strides. Since 2017, the nation has climbed from 15th to 7th place in global tourism revenue rankings. Additionally, it has improved its position from 8th to 4th regarding total tourist arrivals. This upward trend is indicative of Türkiye’s appeal as a destination, underpinned by its rich cultural heritage and captivating landscapes.

Projecting Future Growth in Tourism Arrivals

Looking ahead, the Turkish government expects to maintain its position as the fourth-most popular destination for international tourists through 2027-2029. The objective is not solely focused on tourism revenue but is also coupled with plans to enhance quality and sustainability in the sector. In the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index, Türkiye aims to rise from a projected rank of 36th to 35th in 2027, with further aspirations to reach 33rd place by 2029. These goals reflect an overall commitment to improving the tourism framework and experience for visitors.

However, challenges remain. Global tourism is on the rise, but obstacles such as increasing operational costs, investment shortages, and geopolitical instability pose risks to sustained growth. The World Economic Forum’s 2026 report emphasizes these challenges, noting that factors like affordability, labor shortages, and sustainability are crucial considerations for the industry moving forward. While Türkiye works on enhancing its tourism offerings, broader market conditions also play a significant role in shaping its success.

Challenges in the Global Tourism Landscape

International tourist arrivals saw dramatic growth, hitting a record of 1.5 billion in 2025, representing a 5% increase from 2024 and outpacing pre-pandemic levels. This sector’s total economic impact reached approximately $11.6 trillion, making up nearly 10% of global GDP and supporting around 366 million jobs worldwide. However, frequent disruptions to transportation networks and rising fares due to conflicts can sway traveler confidence and affect booking behaviors.

The tourism landscape in Türkiye is undoubtedly vibrant, but the country must navigate various challenges to realize its ambitious goals. By addressing these issues and enhancing sustainability practices, Türkiye can not only maintain its momentum but also secure a prominent place among the top tourist destinations globally. The road ahead is filled with opportunities, yet it requires strategic focus and planning to harness growth effectively.
