Casualties and Damage from Recent Strikes
The strikes that occurred in Sir al-Gharbiyeh resulted in a shocking loss of life, including a child and six women, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The situation escalated on Saturday when the military consolidated its operations against what it terms Hezbollah targets, ignoring a ceasefire that has been in effect since April 17 and was meant to be maintained for several more weeks. The Iranian-backed militia has responded by continuing its assaults on Israeli forces, including a rocket attack targeting Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.
Reports from Lebanon’s National News Agency indicated that Israeli military actions have struck multiple locations, causing further casualties. Notably, some airstrikes occurred before the Israeli military offered evacuation warnings for over a dozen villages within southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa Valley. Witnesses reported witnessing considerable smoke billowing from affected areas like Nabatieh and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, illustrating the damage inflicted.
Consequences for Civil Institutions

Lebanon’s civil defense agency reported that their regional facility in Nabatieh was destroyed in an overnight strike. Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah, recently sanctioned by the US, indicated that significant transformations are unfolding in the region. He expressed hopes that an agreement between Iran and the United States regarding the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon would materialize soon.
Negotiations Amid Violence
Efforts toward a broader ceasefire have gained traction, with Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem stating that Iran expressed a desire for Lebanon to be part of any agreement reached through Pakistani intermediaries. He voiced optimism regarding an impending resolution that could encompass Lebanon, suggesting that a complete cessation of violence is achievable.
Recently, Lebanese authorities began direct dialogues with Israel, facilitated by US mediation.
