Natalia Ortiz, a recent graduate of Coronado High School, is taking her soccer career to an international level as she prepares to compete in Egypt for two months. Representing the Egyptian national team, Ortiz will participate in the World Cup qualifier for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a critical tournament that could see her team qualify for next summer’s prestigious World Cup.

Challenging Competitors Await

Ortiz’s journey in Egypt will see her pitted against formidable teams from across Africa, including Nigeria, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The stakes are high, as a successful performance could lead to a historic qualification for the World Cup. “This is like the stepping stone right before it, which is a major achievement since I don’t think the women’s national team has ever reached this stage before,” Ortiz remarked. Her determination and skills could prove vital for the team’s success.

Impressive Background and Experience

With a soccer career that began at the tender age of five, Ortiz brings a wealth of experience to the field. This summer marks her second opportunity to represent a national team, having previously played for the Dominican Republic, where she earned a silver medal in the UNCAF tournament. Her family is proud to believe that she is the first athlete from Nevada to be called up by two different national teams, showcasing the growth of women’s soccer. “Women’s soccer has grown substantially in recent years, and it’s wonderful to see the talent getting the recognition it deserves,” she added, reflecting on the sport’s evolution.

A Strong Support Network

The significance of family in Ortiz’s life cannot be overstated. Their unwavering support has been instrumental throughout her soccer journey. “Definitely my family! Their encouragement has meant the world to me, especially during challenging times,” shared Ortiz. Her father, Javier Ortiz, highlighted her resilience and determination, stating, “When one door closes, she finds another. I am incredibly proud of her persistence.”

Multi-talented and Academically Accomplished

Beyond her athletic prowess, Ortiz excels academically as well. She has held leadership roles such as vice president of the National Honor Society and has actively participated in a peer suicide prevention club. While balancing academics and sports, she maintained a remarkable 4.8 weighted GPA. Following her time in Egypt, Ortiz is set to play Division I soccer at Chicago State University, where she has received a full athletic scholarship, underscoring her dual commitment to academic and athletic excellence. She aims to embark on this new chapter after returning from her international adventure.

Natalia Ortiz is not just an athlete; she embodies the spirit of hard work and dedication. As she prepares for this critical tournament, her journey is a prime example of how passion and commitment in sports can lead to incredible opportunities on and off the field.
