The 38-year-old airman was one of six military personnel who lost their lives in a tragic plane crash in Iraq earlier this year. His untimely passing has cast a shadow of grief over his hometown near Indianapolis, where he was celebrated as a local hero.
Tribute and Memories at the Memorial Service
Former neighbors and friends shared their heartfelt reflections during the memorial. “Seth was a true magnet for everyone around him. He had a gentle spirit, and his presence was truly a blessing,” Kim Porlier, a former neighbor now residing in Wisconsin, expressed on social media. She made the journey back to Mooresville with her husband, Mark, who underscored the importance of honoring those who serve. “We are thankful for individuals like him who give so much so that we can enjoy the lives we have,” he remarked.
The somber ceremony was held at Mooresville High School, drawing visitors from all walks of life. Captain Koval and his crew died on March 12, 2026, when their KC-135 aircraft crashed while performing a refueling mission in support of military operations. Larry Floyd, Koval’s childhood pastor, conveyed a message of hope during the service, stating, “On that day, Seth entered into the presence of God and received a crown of righteousness.”
Koval’s Legacy Through Family Remembrances
At the memorial, Koval’s siblings spoke movingly about his impact on their lives. Master Sergeant Caleb Koval, his younger brother, highlighted how significant older siblings can be in shaping choices through their exemplary behavior. “I’ve been blessed to have such a high standard-bearer in Seth,” he shared. Nearby, Koval’s older sister Hayley, a U.S. Coast Guard commander, described him as a peace-loving individual devoid of the urge for conflict. “Seth enjoyed firearms as a hobby, not as tools of violence,” she added.
Heather Koval, Seth’s wife, captivated the attendees with her poignant memories of their life together. “Over the last 20 years, we shared love, laughter, and adventure. Seth was not just my husband; he was my everything,” she said. She emphasized her gratitude for his brave service, recognizing him as a true American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.
A Distinguished Military Career Cut Short
Captain Koval’s military journey began in 2006 when he enlisted as a machinist with the Indiana National Guard. He earned a degree in aviation operations from Purdue University in 2011, eventually transitioning to the Ohio Air National Guard in 2017. After completing pilot training, he earned his wings in 2020 and served as an instructor pilot starting in 2024.
Koval’s wife, Heather, fondly recalled the sense of security he brought to their family, remarking, “He made me feel safe and was my steady rock.” Family always came first for Seth, as demonstrated by his deep love for their son. “Becoming a father was one of his greatest joys,” Hayley Koval reflected.
To honor his service, the town declared Sunday as Captain Seth Koval Day, and a segment of North Indiana Street was renamed in his memory. His legacy will resonate deeply within his community and those who knew and loved him.
