Healthcare Crisis in Gaza
The dire circumstances within Gaza’s healthcare system have drawn criticism from United Nations experts and humanitarian organizations. They argue that Israeli actions have systematically dismantled healthcare services, contributing significantly to the current crisis. With the ongoing conflict having claimed nearly 73,000 Palestinian lives since October last year, these delays are seen as detrimental to patient survival, marking a catastrophic erosion of essential health services.
Recent statements from Gaza’s authorities reveal that restrictions on medical evacuations have intensified. The Rafah border crossing, a vital exit point for patients seeking care, was partially reopened in early February after nearly two years of blockade. However, subsequent closures have hampered access, worsening the already critical situation for healthcare. Officials assert that the crossing operates for only three days a week, with limited allocations for medical evacuations through the Karem Abu Salem crossing to Israel.
Maher Shamia, the acting undersecretary of Gaza’s Health Ministry, has called on global human rights organizations to intervene and advocate for the unrestricted movement of patients in and out of Gaza. He emphasized that many patients could receive care locally if the area’s healthcare infrastructure were revitalized—an endeavor Israel has also been accused of obstructing.
The Humanitarian Situation

In April, the United Nations and the European Union reported a staggering regression in human development within Gaza, estimating it has been set back by 77 years. The recovery and reconstruction demands are monumental, with over $71 billion needed to restore various sectors, including housing, healthcare, education, and commerce. The joint assessment highlights that at least $26 billion will be essential for reconstructing vital services and infrastructure in the first 18 months.
Despite a supposed ceasefire agreement, Israeli attacks on Gaza continue, with restrictions on aid entering the region.
