Team Qatar Celebrates a Strong Start on the First Day of the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Team Qatar is making waves at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans, having kicked off their event participation on Wednesday with an action-packed day of practice and qualifying. The team has set high expectations for their inaugural entry with a rigorous schedule that included two practice sessions and a qualifying round. With 47 laps completed, they have successfully advanced to the Hyperpole qualifying session.

Impressive Start at Le Mans

The #62 Team Qatar entry, in collaboration with Iron Lynx, had a promising debut day at this world-renowned endurance race. Competing in the competitive LMGT3 category, the team was eager to utilize their time on the 13.6 km circuit, learning valuable insights to enhance their performance. During the brief 30-minute qualifying session, which began at 18:30 local time, Qatar’s Abdulla Al-Khelaifi showcased significant skill behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 car.

Unfortunately, traffic during the qualifying session hampered Al-Khelaifi’s later attempts to improve his initial timing. He clocked a commendable lap time of 3 minutes and 57.531 seconds but found himself slipping into the drop zone, where the slowest ten cars would be eliminated from progressing to Hyperpole. However, fortune smiled upon Team Qatar when a post-session disqualification of another competitor moved them up to 15th position, enabling their advance to the crucial Hyperpole session scheduled for later in the evening.

Team’s Resilience and Future Aspirations

Al-Khelaifi expressed his excitement about the team’s progress, stating, “I’m delighted for the team that we were able to progress to Hyperpole. It was very tight, but I’m really happy for the guys as I wanted them to have a chance to compete in Hyperpole.” His optimism reflects the team’s resilience and determination to excel further in the race. The Hyperpole session represents a significant opportunity for them to enhance their standing and potentially make an even stronger mark at Le Mans.

Earlier in the day, Team Qatar utilized the three-hour practice session, refining their setup and acclimatizing to the racing environment. Despite facing challenges, such as numerous yellow flags and slow zones due to stranded vehicles, the team showcased impressive performance. Julian Hanses managed to secure the team’s fastest lap of 3 minutes and 55.904 seconds, placing them fourth overall on the practice timesheets.

Significance of Team Qatar’s Participation

The electric atmosphere of the Le Mans event was palpable as remarks were made regarding the historical significance of Team Qatar’s appearance at this iconic race. Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Latif Al Mannai, President of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation, highlighted this groundbreaking occasion, expressing, “Seeing the Mercedes-AMG LMGT3 in Qatari colours leave the pit lane was a moment of immense pride.” He noted that their participation is a reflection of a long-term vision to bolster motorsport within Qatar, demonstrating local talent’s potential to compete on an international platform.

As the race day unfolds, Team Qatar is slated for another three-hour practice session today, followed by the pivotal Hyperpole events that could propel them into a stronger contention for the race. The excitement continues to build, with the team eager to make their mark in the international motorsport scene. Today promises more opportunities for growth and achievement, culminating in a final hour of practice under the lights, allowing the team to prepare for the rigors of the endurance race ahead.
