ANKARA — Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization has apprehended a suspected media operative linked to the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K). This individual is believed to have intended to enter Turkey to reestablish the group’s recruitment and propaganda networks.
### Details of the Arrest
The suspect, named Ahmet Kazanci, also recognized by the aliases Abu Ubeyde and Abu Ibrahim, was reportedly appointed as the new media coordinator for ISIS-K in Turkey, according to Turkish public broadcaster TRT, which referenced sources within the security forces. Kazanci had illegally moved from Turkey to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region several years ago, where he became affiliated with ISIS-K and served at the group’s camps.
Kazanci managed to survive airstrikes targeting ISIS positions in Pakistan and completed his training in that region. Subsequently, he attempted to return to Turkey illegally, as noted by TRT. His capture occurred along the border area separating Pakistan and Afghanistan, and he was subsequently transported back to Turkey.
### Ongoing Threat of ISIS-K
ISIS-K, the Afghanistan-based offshoot of the Islamic State, has been linked to various significant attacks beyond Afghanistan in recent years. The group is known to maintain an operational network within Turkey. For instance, in January 2024, a gunman attacked Istanbul’s Santa Maria Catholic Church during Sunday Mass, resulting in one fatality. Authorities arrested a suspected accomplice who was believed to have helped orchestrate the assault and supplied the weapon used, with ties to the jihadist group established.
### Implications of Recent Operations
This recent operation by Turkish authorities follows a series of attacks attributed to Islamic State affiliates across the country over the last decade. In one of the latest instances, dozens of suspects were detained following a shooting incident outside a high-rise in Istanbul’s Levent district, which houses the Israeli Consulate General. Although Turkish officials did not officially confirm the focus on the consulate or directly name ISIS as the perpetrators, one of the deceased assailants had been previously subjected to asset freezes due to alleged ties to ISIS.
Earlier, in December, a security operation targeting an ISIS-linked safe house in northwestern Yalova province led to the deaths of three police officers and six militants. Since then, Turkish security forces have conducted numerous raids targeting ISIS networks, resulting in the detainment of hundreds.
### Expanding Counterterrorism Efforts
In light of increasing plots and attacks linked to ISIS-K within Turkey and abroad, operations against Islamic State networks have intensified. Security officials reported that Kazanci admitted his involvement with ISIS-K’s media unit and disclosed information regarding the routes used by militants for transferring between Turkey and the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. This information is vital for counterterrorism efforts aimed at disrupting such networks.
Turkish authorities remain vigilant in their operations against ISIS, emphasizing national security in the face of rising threats. The capture of figures like Kazanci highlights the ongoing challenges posed by international terrorist organizations and the importance of intelligence in addressing these issues effectively.
