In response to Netanyahu’s assertions that some Christian-majority villages in southern Lebanon sought annexation by Israel for protection against Hezbollah, local mayors, clergy, and community leaders have come together to issue a united statement. This declaration emphasizes their unwavering loyalty to the Lebanese state, dismissing the Israeli Prime Minister’s comments as “fabricated and completely detached from reality.” They assert that the residents of these border regions view Lebanese sovereignty as the only legitimate framework for their lives, despite the ongoing challenges posed by Israeli military actions.
Residents are clear in their stance: “We are proud of our national belonging, and we hold firmly to Lebanon as our homeland.” This sentiment has been echoed by officials, who highlight their commitment to remaining within Lebanon, reinforcing their identity, and rejecting any attempts to disrupt social cohesion. The unified response has been hailed by Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who warns against Israeli strategies aimed at exacerbating internal divisions.
