Qatar Unveils Its Inaugural Diamond Exchange

The Qatar Free Zones Authority (QFZ) has launched the Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE), a specialized platform designed for the trading of diamonds and other precious stones. This new initiative is set to establish Qatar as a significant player in the global diamond industry.

Creating a Trade Hub in Qatar

The Qatar Diamond Exchange aims to serve as a central hub for international diamond trading. It features a secure trading floor equipped with private negotiation suites, round-the-clock security, and surveillance systems, ensuring a safe trading environment. Additionally, on-site customs and certification facilities will streamline the trading process, making it easier for businesses to operate efficiently and securely.

Qatar has demonstrated its commitment to ethical trading practices by becoming a full member of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) in 2021. This membership emphasizes the nation’s dedication to the transparent trade of conflict-free rough diamonds. As of 2025, the QFZ has been recognized as the competent authority for the Kimberley Process framework, designating its free zones as the exclusive points for the entry and exit of rough diamonds. Located in the Ras Bufontas Free Zone, the QDE promises members a tightly regulated platform for trading, storing, certifying, and transacting diamonds.

Boosting Economic Diversification

According to QFZ CEO Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Faisal Al-Thani, the QDE marks a significant milestone in Qatar’s efforts to diversify its economy. He stated, “The QDE represents an important step in Qatar’s efforts to further diversify its economy and strengthen its position as a trusted participant in the global diamond trade.” The establishment of the exchange brings together the entire diamond and precious-stone value chain within a single regulated ecosystem, enhancing economic opportunities.

Membership in the exchange is open to various stakeholders, including diamond traders, manufacturers, cutters, polishers, and industry service providers. Members will benefit from access to essential services such as trading licenses, on-site sorting, independent valuation services, secure vault services, and specialized insurance options. Furthermore, the QDE will facilitate tenders for both rough and polished diamonds, connecting producers from Africa and Asia with potential buyers in Europe and the Gulf region.

Promoting Global Connectivity & Trade

The Qatar Diamond Exchange is poised to play a crucial role in promoting global connectivity within the diamond trade. By linking Asian and African producers with European and Gulf markets, the QDE will not only support local businesses but also contribute to the international diamond ecosystem. This initiative encourages a more integrated global market for diamonds, paving the way for innovation, improved practices, and sustainable trading methods.

In conclusion, the inauguration of the Qatar Diamond Exchange marks a forward-thinking move by Qatar’s government to cement its standing in the global diamond industry. With a focus on responsible and transparent trade, Qatar aims not only to enhance its economic profile but also to be a leader in ethical diamond trading practices. This strategic development could serve as a blueprint for other nations looking to establish similar trading platforms, ultimately contributing to an increasingly interconnected global economy.
