Passengers traveling with Qatar Airways to New York’s JFK Airport can enjoy a more streamlined experience when making connections. Thanks to the expansion of the Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) ‘remote baggage screening’ initiative, travelers no longer have to retrieve their checked baggage from the carousel before rechecking it for their onward flights.
Streamlining Airport Procedures
Traditionally, arriving passengers in the United States from international flights had to clear immigration before retrieving their luggage. This often created unnecessary delays as travelers waited at the baggage carousel only to reroute their bags for the next leg of their journey. The new initiative minimizes this hassle, allowing passengers to remain at the gate for their connecting flights without the need to manage their baggage.
The primary rationale behind these protocols is to ensure security checks. Upon entering the United States, all incoming passengers need to proceed through a CBP checkpoint, where their luggage may be subject to inspection. Previously, even if travelers left the checkpoint unbothered, they still faced the inconvenience of rechecking their bags immediately afterward.
Innovative Baggage Screening Trial
In a groundbreaking effort, CBP tested this initiative in collaboration with American Airlines and Australian authorities last year. The pilot program started with flights between Sydney and Los Angeles, where each piece of luggage was screened via X-ray before being loaded onto the aircraft in Australia. These images were then transmitted back to CBP for review while the plane was in transit. If all looked clear, the bags would be sent directly to the passenger’s next flight. However, if any concerns arose, passengers would need to collect their bags for inspection.
This remote screening approach has been positively received, with reports indicating a time-saving benefit of around 25 minutes for connecting passengers on the American Airlines SYD-LAX route. Following the success of this trial, the program has now expanded to include Delta Air Lines flights from Seoul Incheon to multiple U.S. destinations.
Qatar Airways Joins the Initiative
The latest addition to this evolving initiative is Qatar Airways flights arriving from Doha to New York JFK’s New Terminal One. This development not only enhances the travel experience but also requires substantial cooperation among CBP, the airline, and the originating country’s authorities. Ensuring every bag is screened using advanced technology and that images are transmitted to CBP is vital to maintaining security while simplifying the process for consumers.
Additionally, the initiative aligns with broader modernization efforts. One such effort is ‘One Stop Security,’ which allows passengers to be considered security-cleared at their airport of origin. This means that upon arrival in the United States, connecting travelers can bypass baggage claim and the TSA security checkpoint, greatly facilitating the transition to their next flight.

Although programs like One Stop Security are not yet widely offered, they mark a logical progression in passenger experience, originally launched by American Airlines and later expanded by Delta on flights from London Heathrow to various U.S. locations. As more airlines adopt these advanced processes, travelers can anticipate smoother connections and enhanced efficiency for international travel.
