The remains of his grandparents, Shimon Leib and Rivka Herzl, were interred at Mount Herzl, symbolizing the long-awaited closure of a multigenerational journey and fulfilling Herzl’s wish for his family to rest in the Jewish state.
Honoring a Legacy: The Ceremonial Reburial
The state ceremony attracted prominent figures, including President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside representatives from the World Zionist Organization (WZO) and members of the Herzl family. This event marked the culmination of years of efforts to repatriate the grandparents from Zemun, Serbia, to Israel. Herzog’s remarks during the ceremony reflected on the enduring influence of Shimon Leib, who served as a gabbai at a synagogue and was deeply devoted to Jewish restoration efforts long before political Zionism emerged.
The Impact of Family Heritage
In his speech, President Herzog emphasized the value of dreams that transcend generations, stating, “Dreams are not passed down through written inheritance; they are shared around the Shabbat table.” Shimon Leib Herzl’s role as a communal leader helped shape the cultural and spiritual foundation for his grandson, Theodor. According to Herzog, while not every individual can become a state founder, each one can carry the vision and pass it through family traditions.
Netanyahu also acknowledged the connection between Jewish traditions and modern Zionism, remarking on the importance of the shared heritage rooted in the Torah and biblical narratives. “Herzl’s grandparents created the roots from which the trunk, branches, and fruit later grew,” he said, attributing Herzl’s achievements to his brilliance, determination, and practical actions that laid the groundwork for establishing the State of Israel.
A Fulfillment of Herzl’s Wishes
WZO Chairman Yaakov Hagoel spoke with The Jerusalem Post, noting that the ceremony represented the realization of one of Herzl’s enduring wishes. He explained, “Today marks exactly 77 years since the beginning of the fulfillment of Herzl’s will.” The reinterment of Shimon Leib and Rivka Herzl not only honors the founder of modern political Zionism but also his desire for his family to be united in Israel, reinforcing the enduring significance of family within the Zionist narrative.
Despite facing international hostility towards Zionism, Hagoel affirmed a strong commitment to Jewish identity and heritage: “We are Jews. We are Zionists. We are proud, and we hold our heads high.” He emphasized strengthening these ties as a means to confront contemporary challenges, reiterating that every generation must carry forward Herzl’s vision.
As a result of this significant ceremony, Herzl is now interred alongside nearly all his immediate family members at Mount Herzl, with the notable exception of his daughter Trude, who lost her life during the Holocaust. This event serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between the Jewish people and their homeland and underscores the importance of familial bonds in pursuing shared aspirations.
