Delta Offers Discounts on Inaugural Saudi Arabia Route Due to Weaker-Than-Expected Reservations

Delta Air Lines is making headlines with its launch of a special award sale for its new Atlanta to Riyadh route. This significant development comes shortly after Delta’s president reported that ticket demand has been slower than expected. Scheduled to commence on October 23, this nonstop service marks the airline’s debut in Saudi Arabia, featuring the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900.

Flight Details and Promotions

Initially, Delta will offer daily flights from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) to Riyadh Airport (RUH) until October 30. Following that, the frequency is set to decrease to three flights a week. The promotional fare for round-trip economy seats between the two cities starts at just 30,000 SkyMiles, plus approximately $77 in taxes and fees. This award sale provides a unique opportunity for travelers to experience a new route at a fraction of the usual cost.

The award seats are available for travel between October 23, 2023, and April 15, 2027, and can also be booked from various U.S. airports connecting through Atlanta. Participating airports include Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), New York JFK (JFK), and several others. Delta’s promotional offering aims to attract leisure and business travelers looking for cost-effective options.

Addressing Initial Demand Concerns

Despite launching this new route, Delta’s President, Peter Carter, has openly discussed the initially disappointing demand. He noted that seat bookings on the new route were below expectations, attributing this trend to various temporary factors. For instance, a flight scheduled for November 4 had only five seats sold by late July, a significant contrast to typical international flights that generally reach at least 50% occupancy a few months before departure.

Delta remains committed to the route, recognizing its strategic importance. The Atlanta to Riyadh connection is part of a broader partnership with Riyadh Air, a rising player in the Middle Eastern aviation market. Riyadh Air recently launched its operations, adding multiple international destinations to its growing network. The airline’s CEO, Tony Douglas, has outlined ambitious plans to expand to over 100 destinations by 2030, further enhancing Delta’s market presence in the region.

Flight Frequency and Aircraft Information

Upon its launch, the service will operate daily flights from Atlanta to Riyadh, though this is a short-term offering. By the end of October, Delta plans to scale back to three weekly flights: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This daily flight, identified as DL318, will depart Atlanta at 10:30 PM and arrive in Riyadh the next day at 7:35 PM, while the return flight, DL317, will leave Riyadh at 11:30 PM and reach Atlanta at 7:05 AM the following morning.

Utilizing the Airbus A350-900, known for its advanced technology and comfort, Delta will deploy a premium-heavy version of this aircraft. The A350 model can accommodate 275 passengers, featuring spacious Delta One suites, Delta Premium Select seats, and a standard Main Cabin comprised of standard and extra-legroom seats. This emphasis on passenger comfort is designed to enhance the travel experience on one of Delta’s longest routes.

Overall, Delta’s introduction of the Atlanta to Riyadh service is a notable move, offering travelers new options while aiming to strengthen its foothold in an important international market. By addressing initial demand concerns and providing attractive promotional fares, Delta is poised to take advantage of the growing connectivity between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.
