President Erdoğan Launches Initiative to Develop Türkiye’s High-Tech Talent Pool

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at bolstering Türkiye’s community of skilled technology researchers. Over a period of five years, the program is expected to train approximately 3,000 experts, focusing on enhancing the nation’s capabilities in critical technological fields. This effort aligns with Türkiye’s broader strategy to elevate its tech sector and reduce reliance on foreign technologies.

Targeting the Next Generation of Researchers

The initial phase of this program will enroll 550 doctoral students who will be selected through a centralized process. These selected candidates will engage in their studies at 20 prominent research universities throughout Türkiye. By prioritizing specialization in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, semiconductor technology, and advanced computing, the program aims to cultivate a generation of highly skilled professionals equipped to contribute significantly to the nation’s scientific and technical landscape.

Strengthening Türkiye’s Technological Landscape

This initiative underscores Türkiye’s ongoing commitment to developing a homegrown workforce capable of designing and producing cutting-edge technologies. Erdoğan has emphasized the importance of technological self-sufficiency, pointing to a clearly defined vision for the “Türkiye Century.” The program is part of a larger strategy to foster cooperation between universities, research institutions, and industry, thereby creating a robust ecosystem that supports innovation and technological advancement.

Reducing External Dependence on Key Technologies

As the global competition in technology intensifies, Türkiye is making strides to become less dependent on foreign technologies. Significant investments in areas like artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure are part of this plan. The government has been actively promoting education and research efforts in high-demand disciplines, aligning with its vision of becoming a tech leader in the region.

Broadening Educational Offerings in Emerging Technologies

In addition to the new researcher initiative, Türkiye has expanded its university programs focused on emerging technologies. According to the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), 16 new programs will be launched for the 2026-2027 academic year. Currently, the number of AI-related programs across universities has reached 785. These educational offerings emphasize pivotal areas such as AI, cybersecurity, data science, biotechnology, and various digital technologies, further solidifying Türkiye’s position in the global tech arena.

Through this strategic initiative, Erdoğan is not just addressing immediate workforce needs but is also laying the groundwork for a sustainable future in technology. By nurturing a robust talent pool and enhancing the country’s research capabilities, Türkiye aims to strengthen its global competitiveness and innovation landscape. This initiative represents a significant step in Türkiye’s journey to becoming a technological powerhouse, with far-reaching implications for the economy and society alike.
