China’s Esports World Cup Victory Highlights Market Expansion Opportunities

China’s AG.AL has made history by winning the Esports World Cup (EWC) this year in Paris, marking a significant achievement as the first Chinese team to secure this honor. Their remarkable journey earned them a staggering US$7 million in prize money after excelling in multiple competitions throughout the expansive 25-tournament series.

A Historic Victory Presented by French Leadership

The trophy was awarded to AG.AL by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Grand Palais, a prominent landmark in Paris. Saudi Arabia’s Team Falcons claimed second place, while the French team Vitality finished third after an intense month of competition. This event not only celebrated the winners but highlighted the crucial role of competitive gaming in today’s society.

Paris: A New Venue for the EWC

Due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, this year’s Esports World Cup took place in Paris—an unprecedented move since the tournament had been held in Saudi Arabia for previous editions. The change of location demonstrates the growing global interest and reach of the esports industry, which is valued at an impressive US$4.3 billion. China is recognized as one of its largest markets, and industry insiders suggest much of its future growth remains untapped.

The Future of Esports

According to Hans Jagnow, director of clubs, national teams, and player relations at the EWC Foundation, there is still considerable potential for growth in the esports sector. He pointed out that in Western markets, football fans typically spend around US$50 to US$60 annually, while esports fans currently spend about 10% of that amount. This statistic highlights the vast opportunities that remain to be explored in engaging esports audiences.

This year’s event saw over 2,000 athletes compete in 25 tournaments across 24 games, boasting a total prize pool exceeding US$75 million. The Saudi-based esports foundation committed €250 million (approximately US$289 million) to host the event in Paris, and the French government anticipates that it may generate up to €600 million in indirect economic benefits. This investment speaks to the significant impact that esports can have on local economies and the potential for future growth.

President Macron emphasized the importance of hosting the EWC in Paris, calling it a “historic first and an honor.” His enthusiasm reflects the growing recognition of esports as a valuable sector within the entertainment industry, providing a platform for engagement and economic growth.
