Baghdad is taking significant steps to harness its gas resources, a crucial move for boosting energy security and addressing environmental issues. The Iraqi Ministry of Oil is currently advancing four major projects designed to recover associated gas, with a total capacity of 1.4 billion cubic feet. These initiatives not only aim to enhance the country’s energy supply but also strive to eliminate gas flaring by the end of 2029.

Projects Aimed at Gas Recovery

According to Salim al-Rikabi, spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, these projects embody a critical focus for the ministry. The initiatives include the Artawi project, which boasts a capacity of 600 million cubic feet daily, the Bin Omar project at 300 million cubic feet per day, the Nasiriyah project capable of 200 million cubic feet per day, and the Halfaya project, also set at 300 million cubic feet per day. These developments collectively represent a significant investment in the country’s gas infrastructure, intended to maximize resource utilization while minimizing flaring and its associated environmental impact.

Strategic Developments and Energy Supply

In addition to these key projects, the Iraqi Oil Ministry is intensifying efforts to develop gas fields such as Akkas and Mansouriya. These projects are pivotal for increasing gas production, which is essential for meeting domestic energy needs and supplying electricity for both residential and industrial consumers. Currently, Iraq heavily relies on imported Iranian gas—around 50 million cubic feet—to operate its power plants. This fuel accounts for over 40% of the nation’s fuel use and approximately one-third of its electricity generation.

Despite possessing significant oil reserves, Iraq faces ongoing challenges related to its energy sector. During the peak summer months, energy demand can surge to between 50,000 and 55,000 megawatts. However, the country’s current electricity production only reaches approximately 27,000 to 28,000 megawatts, indicating a substantial shortfall. The execution of these gas recovery projects is crucial not just for enhancing power availability, but also for reducing reliance on imports, thereby advancing Iraq’s energy independence.
