Qatar Charity has ramped up its humanitarian initiatives in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor Governorate by launching a vital food assistance program. This initiative has successfully reached over 1,200 vulnerable families grappling with the aftermath of destruction and displacement. In collaboration with the Molham Volunteering Team, the charity distributed essential food baskets to residents in some of the most severely impacted neighborhoods.
Distribution of Food Assistance
This food relief effort saw the distribution of over 1,200 food baskets, with each container weighing approximately 70 kilograms. In total, around 84.6 tonnes of food were delivered, indirectly aiding more than 6,000 individuals. The initiative specifically targeted neighborhoods including Al Ardi, Al Rushdiya, Khasarat, Kanamat, and Sheikh Yassin, where communities continue to face substantial damage and hardship. In some areas, the destruction exceeds 70%, adversely affecting homes, infrastructure, public facilities, and essential services. These challenges have severely hindered residents’ ability to secure reliable sources of income.
Addressing Urgent Needs
As families return home after prolonged displacement, they confront harsh living conditions. Many are forced to reside in partially damaged houses or within the few sections that remain livable. Coupled with escalating food prices, limited job opportunities, and dwindling financial resources, these challenges can make daily survival exceedingly tough. Mohammed Yazji, the relief projects coordinator at Qatar Charity’s Türkiye office, remarked, “This response highlights Qatar Charity’s commitment to supporting families in dire need, particularly those returning from displacement and now struggling in extremely challenging conditions. Providing food assistance not only fulfills urgent needs but also alleviates financial burdens, allowing families to meet their basic needs with dignity.”
Expanding Humanitarian Efforts
Yazji emphasized the ongoing need for humanitarian aid in Deir ez-Zor and other affected regions, advocating for an expansion of services to include water, sanitation, hygiene, healthcare, and livelihood support. This holistic approach aims to not only stabilize families but also enhance their living conditions. The selection of beneficiary families was conducted based on well-defined, needs-based criteria, prioritizing the most at-risk groups. This included larger households, female-headed families, households with elderly individuals or persons with disabilities, and families lacking a steady source of income.
The food assistance project has played a crucial role in meeting essential dietary needs while alleviating the economic pressures faced by these families. It is part of Qatar Charity’s broader humanitarian mission to bolster food security among vulnerable households and support affected communities. The organization emphasizes the necessity of maintaining support for families in Deir ez-Zor, specifically in the areas hit the hardest by destruction. They aim to broaden their humanitarian interventions to help communities recover from the impacts of displacement and rebuild more stable lives for the future.
In conclusion, Qatar Charity’s ongoing efforts in Syria not only provide immediate relief but also lay the groundwork for long-term recovery, emphasizing the importance of sustained support for those affected by conflict and disaster.
