Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Lockheed Martin are collaborating to enhance the integration of the SPICE 1000 missile system on the Israel Air Force’s F-35 Adir stealth fighters. This joint initiative is primarily taking place at Lockheed Martin facilities in the United States, as confirmed by Rafael.
Accelerated Project Announcement
The advancement of this integration was highlighted during the AFA’s Air Space & Cyber conference held in Washington. The F-35 has been anticipated to carry this sophisticated missile, and the acceleration of the project has been documented in the Pentagon’s F-35 Modernized Selected Acquisition Report released earlier this August.
The report further indicates that the integration progress of the Israel-specific Smart, Precise Impact, Cost-Effective 1000B variant is being prioritized through a streamlined SPICE Lite implementation process. The SPICE family, renowned for its precision, includes various models such as the SPICE 2000 and SPICE 250, designed for specific tactical needs.
Capabilities of the SPICE Family
SPICE missiles are electro-optically guided weapons with a tactical stand-off capability. The heaviest variant, SPICE 2000, can carry a 2,000-pound warhead and has an impressive glide range of approximately 60 kilometers. In contrast, the SPICE 1000, which is the focus of the current integration, has an extended reach of about 125 kilometers. This increased range is facilitated through deployable wings, allowing it to engage longer-distance targets effectively.
The smallest variant, SPICE 250, offers a lighter munition tailored for real-time navigation and control, enabling operators to steer the missile or abort missions as needed. Each aircraft can carry multiple SPICE 250 missiles, making this system particularly effective against mobile, high-value targets like missile launchers and air-defense systems.
Operational Flexibility of the F-35
Although the F-35 is recognized globally as one of the most advanced fighter jets, it has limitations regarding its payload capabilities. To maintain a low radar profile, it necessitates storing weapons in its internal bays. However, Israeli Adir variants can carry certain munitions externally, enhancing combat flexibility significantly. This unique capability allows the F-35 to conduct operational strikes employing an external weapons configuration, thereby extending its striking capacity.
Both the F-35 and SPICE 1000 have undergone extensive operational trials. The SPICE family previously proved its efficiency in various missions related to regional security, contributing to operations against critical threats in the Middle East.
Future Developments and Enhancements
Moving forward, Rafael anticipates that F-35 users across the globe will be able to utilize the SPICE 1000 missile, further broadening its deployment capabilities. An imminent arrival of three F-35 units with advanced Technology Refresh 3 hardware is expected, coinciding with ongoing modifications to the aircraft’s core computing systems.
The Block 4 upgrade of the F-35 will enhance target detection and retention capabilities, as well as introduce advanced electronic warfare functionalities. This modernization is integral for ensuring that the F-35 remains a leading force in global air combat, especially in complex operational scenarios.
