Qatar Airways Has Not Yet Transferred Fuel Price Increase to Passengers: Hamad Al-Khater

In a recent interview, Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Ali Al-Khater provided insights into the airline’s strategic approach amid significant increases in jet fuel prices. The rise affects airlines globally, yet Qatar Airways has opted not to transfer these costs to passengers for the time being.

Impact of Rising Fuel Prices on Qatar Airways

As Al-Khater revealed, jet fuel prices have surged by approximately 90% since the year’s onset, reaching around $182 per barrel. This escalation in costs correlates with geopolitical tensions, notably the onset of the Iran-US conflict. Despite this challenging environment, Qatar Airways has decided to keep ticket prices stable. Al-Khater explained that the airline is enhancing fuel optimization and seeking improved fuel efficiencies to mitigate the burden of rising costs. “We are not passing on that cost to our customers at this stage,” he confirmed, highlighting the airline’s commitment to its clientele.

Strategic Route Management and Capacity Focus

During the interview, Al-Khater also discussed the airline’s agile strategy in response to shifting demand patterns. He emphasized a laser focus on capacity expansion in profitable routes while temporarily suspending less lucrative ones. This approach allows Qatar Airways to adapt to the current market and ensures that the airline maintains crucial slots and retains its loyal customer base. “As a result, we still have a pretty resilient picture just because it is demand-driven and people still want to travel,” he noted, underscoring a confidence in robust customer demand despite economic challenges.

Shifts in Passenger Booking Behavior

Al-Khater remarked on notable changes in booking habits, indicating that around 75% of passengers are now reserving flights within just a 60-day timeframe. This trend reflects the growing influence of geopolitical developments on consumer behavior but does not dampen the overall demand for air travel. In fact, Qatar Airways is poised to expand its reach to over 170 destinations soon, demonstrating optimism about the recovery of the travel sector. “Passengers are booking later, but demand is still pretty strong,” he stated, indicating a vital resurgence in travel.

Navigating Geopolitical Challenges

The conversation took a more sobering turn as Al-Khater described the airline’s challenges amidst regional crises. He reflected on the period following his appointment as Group CEO in December 2025, acknowledging the turbulence faced by the airline since then. He characterized the situation as the most significant crisis in the airline’s history, while emphasizing the daily confrontations with geopolitical issues inherent to the aviation industry. Al-Khater reiterated that safety remains the airline’s paramount concern, guiding all decisions and operations during these tumultuous times. “Personally speaking, it was extremely difficult, but safety, again, being paramount and passengers and our people were my priority,” he concluded, showcasing a profound commitment to the airline’s mission and the welfare of its stakeholders.

In summary, Qatar Airways continues to navigate complex challenges with strategic foresight, reinforcing its dedication to maintaining stability for both its passengers and operations. The airline aims to balance profitability with customer loyalty amidst the realities of a fluctuating global market.
