Malaysia inks agreements with Emirates and Qatar Airways to enhance tourism from the Middle East.

Malaysia is actively enhancing its tourism and aviation partnerships with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) through strategic discussions in Dubai. The initiative aims to revitalize tourism ties and improve travel connectivity for visitors from these regions.

Strengthening Ties with Key Airlines

During an official visit from September 13 to 17, Chua Choon Hwa, the Deputy Secretary-General for Tourism at Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, led several high-level dialogues with major airline representatives. Major players like Emirates Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Air Arabia were part of the discussions aimed at reinforcing collaborations between travel agencies and significant stakeholders within the tourism industry. This comes at a time when aviation and tourism activities have faced challenges due to recent developments in the Middle East.

The discussions resulted in the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Emirates and Qatar Airways, which were officiated by Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, the Director-General of Tourism Malaysia. These agreements are designed to enhance promotional efforts and collaborative marketing strategies to attract more tourists from the Middle East. The focus is on improving air connectivity and opening up new commercial pathways for travelers from these regions.

Aiming for Increased Visitor Arrivals

The agreements align with the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign, aimed at boosting international tourist arrivals, particularly from the UAE, GCC, and other regions in the Middle East. “We prioritize building robust partnerships that foster significant tourism growth,” stated Chua. “Air connectivity is critical to this effort. Collaborating with top airlines and travel industry partners will make Malaysia more accessible to travellers from the UAE and beyond.”

Dubai and Abu Dhabi serve as vital international flight hubs, further enabling Malaysia to tap into markets across Africa and Europe. From January to June 2026, more than 30,000 visitors from the GCC were recorded, showcasing the region’s potential for diverse travel segments, including luxury tourism, family adventures, and unique culinary experiences.

Adapting to Traveler Preferences

Tourism Malaysia emphasizes that the country’s varied tourism offerings resonate with the preferences of GCC and Middle Eastern travelers who seek distinct and value-driven experiences. The ongoing campaign underlines the theme “Surreal Experiences,” aligning with current market demands for unique travel opportunities.

By enhancing accessibility and promoting its diverse attractions, Malaysia aims to make the “Malaysia Truly Asia” experience more attainable for travelers from these regions. The efforts manifest Tourism Malaysia’s commitment to leveraging partnerships with industry stakeholders to sustain growth in tourist arrivals from the UAE and the GCC.

As these strategic collaborations take shape, the prospects for revitalizing tourism between Malaysia and the GCC enhance significantly, promising richer experiences for travelers and bolstering international engagements.
