Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in addressing the escalating tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program. During discussions with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, Abdelatty also highlighted opportunities for increased British investment in Egypt, addressing trade relations, and cooperating on regional security issues, including in Sudan and Yemen. These conversations took place on September 22, during the high-level segment of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
Focus on Diplomatic Solutions for Iran’s Nuclear Program
In his meeting with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Abdelatty underscored the necessity of continuing diplomatic strategies to mitigate the risk associated with Iran’s nuclear endeavors. He advocated for prioritizing political avenues to prevent escalating tensions in the region. The officials also reviewed the results of the IAEA’s recent General Conference in Vienna, which took place from September 14 to 18, and discussed Egypt’s collaboration with the agency concerning peaceful nuclear energy applications.
Abdelatty expressed optimism about the upcoming 7th session of the UN Conference focused on creating a Middle East Zone free from nuclear weapons and other forms of mass destruction, set to occur in November in New York. He called for greater commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in the region, advocating that all nuclear facilities undergo comprehensive monitoring under the IAEA’s safeguards.
Strengthening UK-Egypt Bilateral Relations
Separately, Abdelatty and Powell discussed the potential for bolstering British investment in Egypt. The Egyptian Foreign Minister was keen on expanding access for Egyptian exports to the UK, aiming to exploit the bilateral partnership agreement to create new trade opportunities. He stressed the need for both nations to enhance economic ties, thereby opening pathways for British companies to invest in Egypt.
The discussions also tackled broader regional developments. Abdelatty praised the UK’s recent actions aimed at limiting trade related to Israeli settlements and reaffirmed Egypt’s support for a sovereign Palestinian state based on the borders established before June 1967. His remarks reflect Egypt’s ongoing commitment to addressing critical regional issues through diplomatic channels.
Addressing Sudan and Yemen: Commitment to Peace and Security
In relation to Sudan, Abdelatty called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict and emphasized the importance of a political settlement achieved through dialogue. Cairo has consistently supported Sudan’s territorial unity, sovereignty, and the integrity of its national institutions. He articulated Egypt’s dedication to a stable regional environment and the necessity for sustainable peace.
Regarding Yemen, Abdelatty reiterated calls for de-escalation and sought political remedies to the long-standing crisis. He also emphasized the importance of maritime security and the freedom of navigation, aligning his views with international legal standards. These discussions showcase Egypt’s proactive approach to fostering stability in a region marked by turmoil, reinforcing its role as a mediator in international crises.
In summary, both meetings provided a platform for Egypt to assert its priorities in foreign policy and demonstrate a commitment to enhancing international cooperation, bolstering economic ties, and promoting peace and stability within the region.
