Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently conducted an inspection of various agricultural and afforestation projects in Cairo Governorate. This visit followed a meeting aimed at assessing the progress of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s “Greening Greater Cairo” initiative. The objective of this project is to enhance the environmental landscape of the region and promote a more sustainable and green urban living environment.
Transforming Urban Spaces into Green Areas
During the inspection, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for a comprehensive national plan to convert unused or vacant lands into parks and green spaces after they have been cleared. This initiative is crucial for expanding tree cover in vital areas, including major roads, central medians, and city entrances. By increasing the available green spaces per capita, the government aims to boost residents’ quality of life and promote better environmental conditions.
The Prime Minister’s tour showcased significant tree-planting activities beneath several key structures, including the Ibrahim Al-Orabi Bridge and the Athar El-Nabi Bridge area, as well as locations along the Civilisations Axis. He urged the expansion of this green initiative to all governorates across the country, highlighting the commitment to ecological improvement on a broader scale.
Collaborative Efforts for a Greener Cairo
In his presentation, Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber outlined the “Greening Cairo” implementation plan, which focuses on collaboration among various stakeholders. This plan operates under three main components: government bodies like the Cairo General Authority for Cleaning and Beautification, environmental NGOs, and civil society groups including banks and educational institutions. The engagement of citizens, shop owners, and students is also integral to the success of this initiative.
The strategy emphasizes public awareness campaigns aimed at educating residents about tree planting and the importance of preserving green spaces. In addition, it seeks to ramp up tree planting along significant roadways, streets, and available vacant sites. Developed in collaboration with a specialized consultancy, the plan identifies tree species that thrive in Egypt’s unique climate. Prioritized selections offer essential benefits like shade, rapid growth, resilience, and decreased water requirements.
Ambitious Goals for Planting
As part of this ambitious undertaking, over 3,000 trees and close to 700,000 shrubs and plants have already been planted in various locations across Cairo. Looking ahead, the plan aims to introduce one million new plants within a year, which includes 60,000 trees. Each district is set to receive at least 1,500 trees, with distributions tailored to the size and available planting areas within respective locales. Furthermore, the initiative will also incorporate approximately 800,000 shrubs and plants into the urban green landscape.
The district plants will not only contribute to environmental benefits but also help develop a unique botanical identity for each area, enhancing local pride and community connection to the greening efforts. Through these concerted actions, Cairo seeks to foster a greener, healthier urban environment that aligns with sustainable development goals.
