Houthis announce missile and drone strikes on Saudi Aramco in Riyadh

The situation in Yemen continues to escalate, with the Houthi group making bold claims regarding its military operations against Saudi Arabia. As the conflict rages on, the dynamics between the warring factions are becoming increasingly complex, showcasing ongoing tensions that influence regional stability.

Recent Houthi Attacks on Saudi Oil Infrastructure

On October 3, 2026, the Houthi group announced that it had successfully targeted the Saudi oil giant, Aramco, with a series of ballistic missiles and drones aimed at locations in Riyadh. This operation was purportedly a retaliation against the recent airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree stated that the operation fulfilled its objectives, as it resulted in significant fires at the sites hit. This escalation indicates the Houthi’s willingness to intensify its attacks on Saudi Arabia in response to ongoing military actions against Yemen.

Escalating Tensions and Airstrikes

Saree also disclosed that Sanaa and surrounding provinces had faced over 60 airstrikes within the previous 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total to an alarming 1,420 strikes attributed to Saudi Arabia. He emphasized that the Houthis are prepared to meet both blockade and escalation with similar responses, indicating a potential for further violence in the region. This hostile exchange marks a significant uptick in military activities and reinforces the deepening animosity between the two sides.

Saudi Response: A Denial of Houthi Claims

In response to the Houthi assertions, Turki al-Maliki, a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition that supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government, dismissed the claims as “misleading.” Al-Maliki argues that the Houthis are attempting to divert attention from their own losses and the rising public dissatisfaction over their strategies and foreign affiliations. His remarks highlight the complex narrative surrounding the conflict, where both sides vie for public perception amid increasingly difficult circumstances.

Background and Ongoing Conflict

The conflict has its roots in a power struggle that has persisted since March 2015, when Saudi Arabia intervened in Yemen to support its government against the Houthi forces. The Houthis gained control of Sanaa and other provinces in September 2014 and have since solidified their foothold, making the situation in Yemen one of the most complicated humanitarian crises in recent history.

In addition, the Houthis’ declaration of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia earlier this year, in July, underscores the conflict’s escalating nature. They justified this action as a response to the Saudi blockade on areas under their control, equating it to a military necessity. Since that point, the group has specifically targeted Saudi energy infrastructure, highlighting the interconnectedness of military strategy and economic stability in this ongoing conflict.

As the situation develops, both the Houthi group and the Saudi coalition appear entrenched in their positions, indicating that the path to peace remains fraught with difficulties, requiring careful navigation and potential diplomacy to avoid further escalation and humanitarian fallout.
