Turkey and Czechia Discuss New Recycling Collaboration Opportunities at Istanbul Forum

Representatives from public institutions, local authorities, businesses, and the recycling sector from Türkiye and Czechia convened in Istanbul for the Türkiye-Czechia Sustainable Recycling Forum, aimed at identifying new avenues for collaboration. This important gathering took place at the Social Facilities Conference Hall, part of Istanbul Technical University’s Macka Campus, and was jointly organized by the Czech Consulate General in Istanbul, the Our World Foundation, and the Climate and Sustainability Sciences Research Foundation (ISBAV).

Focus on Collaborative Opportunities

The forum served as a critical platform for dialogue surrounding sustainable waste management and recycling practices. Key participants included Istanbul’s Deputy Governor Cengiz Karabulut, Czech Consul General in Istanbul Olga Hajflerova, and various heads of foreign relations and environmental protection from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. Also present were representatives from Türkiye’s Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry, signaling a unified effort from both nations to tackle pressing environmental issues.

Diverse stakeholders—including industry organizations, civil society groups, and businesses specializing in recycling and waste management—actively engaged in discussions. The topics ranged from innovative recycling technologies to potential commercial partnerships. These dialogues underscored the necessity of international cooperation to meet today’s environmental challenges effectively.

Goals of the Forum: Transforming Dialogue into Action

Kahraman Haliscelik, the President of the Our World Foundation, opened the session with a powerful address, emphasizing that the aim of the forum transcended mere conversation. Haliscelik stressed that the primary objective was to foster actionable collaboration between public and private entities in Türkiye and Czechia. He articulated a clear vision: “Our aim is to transform dialogue into cooperation, and cooperation into tangible projects and commercial partnerships.”

He further elaborated on why the realm of recycling and waste management should not just be viewed as an environmental concern but rather as a vital area for technological advancement, competitive investment, and economic growth. The collaborative spirit demonstrated at the forum was seen as essential for the successful implementation of innovative, sustainable solutions in this sector.

Sharing Knowledge and Experience Across Borders

Following Haliscelik’s initial remarks, Hajflerova underscored the importance of bridging gaps between the public and private sectors. She indicated that the forum was a significant step in creating new business connections and fostering long-term partnerships between institutions and businesses from both nations. According to Hajflerova, the complementary strengths of Türkiye and Czechia present immense opportunities for collaboration in sustainability initiatives.

Presentations were conducted by representatives from Czech public institutions and businesses, providing insights into ongoing recycling efforts, environmental protection initiatives, and feasible avenues for cooperative action. These discussions highlighted potential partnerships that could flourish between the two nations, with Czech companies showcasing innovative solutions that align with Türkiye’s needs.

B2B Meetings and Future Visions

In the afternoon, business-to-business meetings took place, allowing company representatives from both Türkiye and Czechia to explore potential commercial relationships. This format facilitated direct engagement and efficient information sharing, setting the stage for future collaborations in technology and investment in the recycling sector.

On the second day, the Czech delegation was scheduled for technical visits to recycling and waste management facilities in Kocaeli. These visits aimed to provide firsthand insights into Türkiye’s industry practices, fostering deeper connections among stakeholders. Ultimately, the goal was to convert identified opportunities for cooperation into actionable projects and forge lasting partnerships among public institutions and companies within both countries.
