Houthi Assaults: Insights into Attacks on Saudi Arabia and Aden Airport in Yemen

Yemen’s ongoing conflict has intensified as the Iran-supported Houthi rebels have recently claimed responsibility for missile and drone assaults on Saudi Arabian airports and military sites. This alarming development signals a further escalation in a conflict that is already significant in the Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape, raising concerns about vital shipping routes.

Recent Attacks on Saudi Arabia

On a recent Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree, the Houthis’ military spokesperson, announced that ballistic missiles and drones targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Though specific evidence to support these claims was not provided, flight tracking company Flightradar24 indicated that some flights at the airport experienced temporary disruptions. Additionally, the missile assaults were said to have hit Abha airport, alongside military locations in Khamis Mushait, Najran, and Asir, which are situated in southwestern Saudi Arabia near Yemen’s border.

In response, Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition opposing the Houthis, confirmed that they successfully intercepted and destroyed a missile north of Riyadh. This serves as a reminder of the escalating hostilities, where missile attacks have become a common tactic used by the Houthis in their ongoing struggle against Saudi forces.

Escalating Military Operations

In recent days, Saudi Arabia and its allied Yemeni forces have initiated extensive ground and air offensives aimed at reclaiming territory lost to the Houthis. These offensives specifically target areas along Yemen’s western Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are crucial for maritime surveillance and control over shipping routes. The efforts to retake these strategic locations are essential for Saudi Arabia to mitigate the threat posed by Houthi forces that have gained significant surveillance capabilities in the region.

Despite these military efforts, reports indicate that fighting has concentrated around the town of Dhubab, approximately 54 kilometers south of Mokha, a vital port city. In addition, clashes have been reported in Waziayah, a district that serves as a key route connecting Yemen’s highlands with the Red Sea, further complicating the situation on the ground.

Missile Strikes in Aden

The Houthis escalated their attacks on another front by targeting Yemen’s port city of Aden, which hosts the internationally recognized government of Yemen. An explosion was reported around 2 a.m. on a recent Wednesday, as the rebels claimed responsibility for striking a military camp near the Aden airport with ballistic missiles. Fortunately, local authorities reported no casualties from the attack. However, the proximity of these strikes to a civilian area raises serious alarm regarding the safety of passengers and airport operations.

The Aden police subsequently condemned the attack as a direct threat to civilian life, impacting the safety of passengers, employees, and crew at the airport. Notably, the missile strike occurred just before the scheduled arrival of a flight from Cairo, causing significant concern and highlighting the humanitarian risks associated with such military actions.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, suggested that the Houthis aim to impose economic burdens upon Saudi Arabia through attacks on civilian infrastructure, including oil facilities and airports. This strategy indicates the Houthis’ intent to leverage military pressure to extract concessions from their rivals. As the situation unfolds, the repercussions of escalating military actions are expected to affect not just the involved parties but also the broader regional stability.

In summary, the recent missile assaults by the Houthis on Saudi Arabian targets and their ongoing offensives reveal an urgent need for diplomatic interventions to prevent further escalation. The stakes are high as the conflict continues to evolve, impacting both regional security and humanitarian conditions in Yemen.
