Is Vincenzo Montella Facing Dismissal? Reports Indicate Turkey Has Already Made a Decision

Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, the president of the Turkish Football Federation, is reportedly set to make a significant change in the national team leadership, although no official announcement has yet been made. Current head coach Vincenzo Montella faces mounting pressure following a disappointing World Cup performance and a string of poor results in the Nations League.

Montella Under Fire After Disappointing World Cup

Vincenzo Montella’s tenure as Turkey’s head coach has come under intense scrutiny in recent months. The coach was expected to lead Turkey to a successful outing in the World Cup, particularly since many viewed the team as dark horses in the tournament. Unfortunately, the reality was quite different, as Turkey suffered early exits in the group stage, losing to Australia and Paraguay, which left fans and pundits dismayed. Following this disappointing performance, Montella’s position became increasingly precarious.

The current Nations League season has offered no respite for Montella. Even though Turkey initially showed promise in a close 1-0 defeat to France, the subsequent matches were disheartening. Heavy losses against both Italy and Belgium compounded the team’s struggles, with a total of four defeats in their opening matches of the season. With the last of these losses occurring against Italy, where Turkey fell 3-1 at home, the likelihood of relegation from League A appears almost certain.

Montella’s Response to Criticism

In the wake of the mounting criticism, Montella has taken a defiant stance. After the 3-0 loss to Belgium, he asserted that the match statistics were more balanced than the scoreline suggested and emphasized the need to minimize mistakes against high-caliber opponents. “Being in League A is a privilege and not a punishment,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of continuous development and effort from his players.

Despite the backlash, Montella pointed to recent achievements, such as returning Turkey to the World Cup after a 24-year absence and promoting the team to League A. He succeeded German coach Stefan Kuntz in September 2023 and had initially led the team to a commendable performance at Euro 2024, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to the Netherlands in a tightly contested match.

Potential Successors and Future Outlook

The stakes have been especially high for Montella, given the considerable expectations for Turkey’s World Cup campaign. With a strong roster that includes notable players like Arda Güler, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Kenan Yildiz, the team was anticipated to perform well. Hence, the early exit from the tournament dampened spirits and increased the pressure on Montella.

Currently, Montella’s contract extends to Euro 2028, and while he was expected to guide Turkey through the next major tournaments, his future remains uncertain. Should the Federation confirm his dismissal, the identity of his successor is still unclear. Upcoming matches against Belgium and France in mid-November will be critical, and the outcome of these games could very well determine the immediate direction of Turkish football.
