In a significant move to bolster economic ties, the Qatar Chamber (QC) and the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce (FCCI) have formalized their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing the Qatar-Iraq Joint Business Council. This agreement seeks to enhance interactions between institutions, businesses, and entrepreneurs in both nations, thereby strengthening economic relations and fostering cooperation in empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Enhancing Economic Collaboration
The MoU was inked during a meeting between His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohamed Al-Thani, Chairman of Qatar Chamber, and Amer Khalaf Alawi, President of the FCCI, alongside the Iraqi Ambassador to Qatar, Mohammed Jaafar Al Sadr. Discussions concentrated on ways to deepen the partnership between the two chambers, as well as avenues to broaden economic and trade ties between Qatar and Iraq. Notably, stakeholders explored the critical role of the private sector in promoting joint investment initiatives, developing business collaborations, and enhancing trade exchanges.
Participants reviewed about 60 investment prospects linked to the Iraqi Development Road (IDR) project, which boasts an estimated worth of $250 billion. These opportunities span multiple sectors, including transport and logistics, manufacturing, energy, mining, agriculture, and tourism, creating a vast landscape for potential investment.
Fostering Strategic Partnerships
The QC Chairman expressed Qatar Chamber’s commitment to facilitating direct communication between the two business communities, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and encouraging mutually beneficial projects. He underscored that given the rapidly changing global and regional economic landscape, enhancing cooperation between the private sectors of Qatar and Iraq is crucial. He conveyed optimism that this meeting would generate strategic partnership avenues leveraging the deep-rooted ties that exist between the two nations.
Highlighting the mutual potential of their markets, he noted that Iraq’s vibrant economy presents enticing opportunities for Qatari investors. Conversely, Qatar’s investor-friendly environment, backed by contemporary legislation and sophisticated infrastructure, provides significant possibilities for Iraqi businesses aiming for expansion.
Commitment to Growth and Development
Both parties emphasized the importance of capitalizing on the identified opportunities. The QC Chairman reiterated Qatar Chamber’s role as a facilitator to connect business communities, advocating for the sharing of information and cross-border networking to achieve tangible commercial results. He described the signing of the MoU as a pivotal moment towards enhancing communication between the economic actors of both nations, expressing confidence that it would lay the groundwork for impactful initiatives.
For his part, Amer Alawi affirmed the Iraqi delegation’s strong desire to strengthen economic ties with Qatar and outlined the supportive bonds that exist between the two countries as fertile ground for beneficial commercial partnerships. He indicated that the FCCI actively encourages Iraqi enterprises to pursue promising investment opportunities in Qatar and to forge trade collaborations.
Additionally, Mohamed bin Twar Al Kuwari, QC’s First Vice Chairman, expressed eagerness among Qatari entrepreneurs to expand cooperation with Iraqi counterparts, noting significant partnership opportunities across diverse economic sectors. The meeting also featured presentations, including one from the Iraqi Ministry of Trade, highlighting strategies to enhance trade relations.
Overall, this MoU marks a critical step toward fostering a thriving economic partnership between Qatar and Iraq, underscoring the importance of collaboration for business communities in both countries. The commitment to shared growth and development promises to open doors to new discussions, investments, and successful ventures.
