UN envoy cautions that Yemen is facing ‘full-scale war’ again, calls for dialogue | United Nations News

The ongoing conflict in Yemen has reached a critical stage, prompting urgent calls for international intervention. Saudi Arabia, alongside Yemen’s recognized government, has appealed to the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action against the escalating violence perpetrated by the Houthi movement. The unrest not only threatens regional stability but also endangers countless civilian lives.

Escalation of Violence in Yemen

Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, recently highlighted the grave situation during a Security Council meeting, stating that the country has reverted to “full-scale war.” The fighting between Houthi forces and the internationally recognized Yemeni government has intensified, leading to severe ramifications for civilians, especially women and children. Grundberg noted that these innocent lives are bearing the brunt of this escalating violence, pointing out that over 46 civilians have lost their lives, with many more injured since August.

The envoy further elaborated on the broader implications of the conflict, noting that instability in Yemen has ramifications across the Middle East. He emphasized that the protection of international trade and navigation are critical concerns that must be addressed as the conflict continues. According to Grundberg, any international efforts should be rooted in the realities faced by the Yemeni people, recognizing their needs and aspirations. He pressed the necessity of shifting focus towards political solutions, insisting that military victories cannot replace the dialogues necessary for achieving lasting peace.

Urgent Action Needed from the Security Council

Abdullah Ali Fadhel al-Saadi, the UN representative for Yemen’s recognized government, expressed grave concerns regarding the escalation of threats from the Houthis, asserting that it is no longer merely an internal conflict. He urged the Security Council to implement “decisive, practical measures” aimed at cutting down the supply of funds, weapons, and technology to the Houthi movement. Al-Saadi also acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s ongoing support for the Yemeni government and its people, emphasizing the need for solidarity in facing this common threat.

Recently, Houthi attacks have directly targeted Saudi Arabia, underscoring the regional implications of the conflict. A recent incident at the King Khalid International Airport resulted in the death of three Saudi citizens following multiple attacks. These assaults have drawn widespread condemnation from Gulf states and European nations, with Switzerland categorizing the strike as “unacceptable.” Saudi Arabia’s UN representative, Abdulaziz al-Wasil, reiterated the necessity for the Security Council to address the “dangerous escalation” occurring in Yemen, stressing that Riyadh would take every measure to ensure that its security is not threatened.

Call for Mediation and Political Strategies

There is growing recognition among international leaders that the conflict in Yemen requires more than just military solutions; it desperately needs diplomatic engagement. Grundberg urged members of the Security Council to collectively support mediation efforts aimed at facilitating dialogue between the warring factions. He highlighted that without a push towards political engagement, the prospect of war becoming a permanent reality for Yemen might grow increasingly likely.

The situation in Yemen showcases the need for a concerted international response to foster peace and stability. As the conflict continues to have devastating effects on civilians, the call for global action has never been more urgent. Diplomacy, backed by regional cooperation, stands as the best hope for mitigating the ongoing violence and paving the way for long-term peace in Yemen.
