Syria blames Israel for supplying and financing militias in Suwayda to create ‘turmoil’

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani recently leveled serious accusations against Israel, alleging that the country is providing support to armed groups in Suwayda. He claims that Israel is equipping these militias with resources to pursue an “agenda of chaos” in the region. This statement marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between Syria and Israel.

Allegations of Support for Militias

During a press conference in Damascus, alongside Sabrina Dallafior, the head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), al-Shaibani emphasized Israel’s role in destabilizing Syria since the ousting of the Assad regime in December 2024. He accused Israeli forces of sponsoring attacks on Syrian infrastructure and expanding their territorial presence, thus undermining national sovereignty. The Syrian government has long alleged that these actions contribute to increased violence and disorder in the region.

Human Rights Concerns

The Foreign Minister further condemned Israel for what he describes as the forced displacement of Syrians and arbitrary arrests, highlighting concerns over the fate of numerous detainees whose whereabouts remain unknown. This pattern of alleged human rights violations stresses the urgency of international intervention. Al-Shaibani called upon the global community to put an end to Israeli actions that threaten regional stability and stressed the importance of revisiting the 1974 disengagement agreement, which aimed to establish a UN-monitored buffer zone between Syrian and Israeli forces.

International Diplomatic Efforts

In light of the escalating tensions, al-Shaibani urged Israel to participate earnestly in US-sponsored negotiations, which have reportedly been in progress for eighteen months. He expressed Syria’s commitment to reaching a security agreement that respects its sovereignty but stressed that constructive engagement is essential. The longstanding conflict has seen numerous rounds of US-mediated discussions designed to ease tensions and outline terms for security cooperation.

Israeli control over the Golan Heights since 1967 remains a contentious issue, especially after the Assad regime’s fall, which led to an expansion of Israeli forces in southern Syria. The ongoing military operations and arrests have raised concerns about stability in the already volatile region.

Recent Diplomatic Meetings

In August, diplomatic delegations from Syria and Israel convened in Jordan under US mediation, focusing on potential measures to curb Israeli military actions and outline conditions for the withdrawal of Israeli forces to their positions prior to December 2024. These discussions represent a critical avenue for dialogue amid the ongoing conflict, as both nations grapple with the complex geopolitical landscape.

As these developments unfold, the international community will be closely monitoring the situation in Syria and Israel, as any significant changes could lead to further instability in the region. The recent statements by al-Shaibani underscore the urgency for a diplomatic resolution, as prolonged tensions threaten to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis already affecting millions.
