Lee pledges to track down fugitives and bring UAE gambling ring leaders back to Korea

On October 14, President Lee Jae-myung announced the apprehension of key figures behind a substantial illegal gambling operation that was valued at 3.1 trillion won. These individuals were taken into custody in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after evading capture for a decade. President Lee emphasized that “no one can escape the long arm of the law by hiding abroad,” reaffirming the government’s commitment to pursuing justice, extraditing criminals to South Korea, and recovering illicit profits.

Successful International Collaboration

During this announcement, the president shared a report on social media highlighting the successful collaboration between a pan-government task force focused on transnational crime and UAE authorities. He stated, “We will respond unwaveringly to cross-border crimes and ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens.” This joint effort marks a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against organized crime, showcasing the effectiveness of international cooperation.

Details of the Operation

The successful operation led to the arrest of three individuals, including the ringleader of the gambling site along with a deputy and a developer. Notably, two of them were quickly extradited back to South Korea while further legal processes are underway for the ringleader. These individuals face serious accusations, including operating an illegal gambling platform that generated significant revenue across multiple countries such as the Philippines and Malaysia.

Criminal Activities Uncovered

The investigation revealed that the ringleader and deputy ringleader had been involved in laundering the gains from their illegal activities. Additionally, the developer played a crucial role in the technical aspects, managing the operations of another gambling site valued at 500 billion won. After fleeing the country in 2016, the suspects attempted to evade law enforcement by using passports from third countries, but the task force coordinated closely with the UAE to track their movements. The operation, dubbed “HALAK,” meaning “ruin” or “destruction” in Arabic, highlights the strategic planning involved in capturing these criminals.

Furthermore, the president expressed gratitude to the UAE government for their cooperation, recognizing the importance of building strong international partnerships to combat crime. “We extend our appreciation to President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on behalf of our people,” he noted, acknowledging the collaborative spirit that made this operation possible.

Continued Efforts Against Crime

In a separate initiative, President Lee also discussed new regulations aimed at improving the operational integrity of private ambulances in South Korea. He announced mandatory real-time GPS tracking for these vehicles, declaring that “fake ambulances will now disappear.” This rule aims to instill public confidence and encourage drivers to yield when they hear sirens, improving emergency response times.

The recent events illustrate a strong commitment to law enforcement and public safety, with President Lee promising thorough investigations and swift justice against those engaging in criminal activities.
