Qatar Emphasizes Assistance for 9.5 Million Displaced Individuals

In recent years, Qatar has emerged as a key ally of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), demonstrating its commitment to humanitarian efforts on a global scale. This partnership is underscored by significant support that enables various programs aimed at aiding refugees and displaced populations.

Strengthening Humanitarian Efforts

Qatar’s contributions have empowered UNHCR initiatives, providing vital assistance to over 9.5 million refugees, internally displaced individuals, and members of host communities. The strategic partnership enhances access to essential services and protections, furthering humanitarian objectives in numerous conflict zones worldwide. During the 77th session of the Executive Committee of the UNHCR in Geneva, Second Secretary Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mansouri highlighted the impact of Qatar’s support in his remarks, emphasizing the nation’s ongoing commitment to alleviating human suffering.

Commitment to Palestinian Rights

At the forefront of Qatar’s humanitarian advocacy is a strong condemnation of the displacement faced by the Palestinian people. Al Mansouri called upon the international community to intervene and halt Israel’s settlement expansions, which threaten to alter the demographic and geographic landscape of occupied Palestinian territories. He underscored the need for robust support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and reiterated the necessity of finding a just resolution for Palestinian refugees in alignment with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Advancing International Protection for Refugees

In alignment with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Al Mansouri stressed the importance of global solidarity in protecting refugee rights and adhering to international law. Qatar has expressed hope that the upcoming 2027 Global Refugee Forum will serve as a platform to renew commitments and strengthen international partnerships. This would further enhance collaborative efforts aimed at addressing the growing refugee crisis.

Financial Contributions and Future Initiatives

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has been instrumental in providing financial support to refugees and host nations, with contributions exceeding USD 544 million from 2012 through June 2026. This funding targets various sectors, particularly education, health, relief services, and economic development. Notably, the Education Above All (EAA) Foundation has recently renewed its partnership with UNHCR, aiming to ensure that 200,000 refugee children who currently lack educational opportunities will gain access to education by 2028.

In summary, Qatar’s proactive approach to enhancing its role as a strategic partner of UNHCR illustrates its dedication to humanitarian work. Through powerful advocacy for Palestinian rights and significant financial contributions, the nation is taking meaningful steps toward improving the lives of refugees and displaced persons around the world.
