This month, a diverse group of 40 residents in the United Arab Emirates engaged deeply with Korean traditional music by learning to play the “janggu,” a traditional double-headed drum. Their journey culminated in a vibrant live performance at the Korean Cultural Center in Abu Dhabi.
Overview of the Korean Traditional Music School
Organized by the Korean Cultural Center UAE in collaboration with the National Gugak Center, the 2026 Overseas Korean Traditional Music School took place from October 5 to 12 at Arirang Hall. This initiative aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive introduction to the elements of Korean traditional music, focusing on fundamental skills such as basic rhythms and ensemble play. Attendees, ranging in age from young children to adults, were enthusiastic about learning and performed their newly acquired skills during a showcase.
Expert Instruction and Techniques
The hands-on instruction was led by Kwon Oh-sung, a distinguished educator from the National Gugak Center and a certified practitioner of “Namsadang Nori,” a traditional performing art recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Over the course of the program, participants not only learned about the janggu’s structure but also focused on essential playing postures and stick techniques. Through collaborative practice, they developed their abilities to play traditional rhythms and harmonize with one another, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.
Connecting Generations Through Music
The program’s design successfully brought together individuals from varied backgrounds and age groups, underlining how Korean traditional music can bridge generational gaps through collective learning and performance. The final showcase was particularly significant as it offered participants—many of whom were newcomers to “gugak” (Korean traditional music)—the stage to display their talents and achievements. This event concluded with a certificate-awarding ceremony, marking a milestone in their musical journey.
Continuing the Legacy of Gugak
In addition to the comprehensive music program, the cultural center also offered a one-day gugak class open to the general public, extending the opportunity to explore Korean traditional music beyond the enrolled participants. This initiative is the start of a three-year educational commitment aimed at empowering participants to create their own gugak clubs and informal music groups, ensuring that the learning process and camaraderie continue beyond formal classes.
The Korean Cultural Center UAE has emphasized its dedication to ongoing support, providing resources for participants as they form independent music groups. Through these efforts, the center aims to sustain enthusiasm for Korean traditional music throughout the Emirates, enriching the cultural tapestry of the region.
