Iraq Dismisses PKK Leaders as Progress is Made on Exit to Third Countries

Iraq is taking decisive steps to ensure that the ringleaders of the PKK/KCK terrorist organization are not allowed to remain within its borders. Turkey has suggested transferring these individuals to third countries under its supervision. This move comes in light of Turkey’s ongoing operations to dismantle terrorist strongholds in key regions such as Gara and Hakurk, following the recent evacuation of Metina.

Clearing Out Key Logistics Hubs

The Turkish security forces have indicated that the evacuation of Metina, which has long served as a strategic logistics hub for the PKK/KCK, will pave the way for subsequent operations targeting shelters in the Gara and Hakurk areas. The destruction of all caves leading to Qandil, the group’s headquarters, is expected to occur in stages, possibly concluding by January. The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) of Turkey is meticulously documenting all weapons and equipment found at these sites before their destruction. Such items include explosives, ammunition, and various technological gadgets. Notably, even caves containing medical facilities will be demolished to prevent any future use.

The operations are being carried out in collaboration with the local authorities in northern Iraq. The methodical approach aims to ensure that the areas previously occupied by the PKK/KCK are thoroughly secured and no longer serve as strongholds for terrorist activities.

Consolidation of PKK Members in Qandil

Meanwhile, PKK members are being consolidated in Qandil as a precautionary measure against further fragmentation. Sources reveal that the members are being compiled into lists for potential transfer, either back to Turkey or to other designated locations. Special facilities will be set up at consulates to facilitate this process. The movement of individuals from Qandil will be carefully organized to ensure a smooth transition.

Evacuations from Sinjar Under Iraqi Oversight

Iraq is also focused on the logistical challenges posed by its territory in Sinjar. The Iraqi government’s plans for evacuating individuals from Sinjar mirror the ongoing processes in Syria. Those in Sinjar will have the option to return to Turkey or remain in Iraq, depending on their preferences. Iraqi officials have expressed optimism about clearing the armed presence from Mount Sinjar within a month, with significant progress already achieved. The integration of armed individuals into state security forces is also underway, with plans to absorb additional personnel into both armed and civilian institutions.

Ocalan’s Status and the Future of the PKK

Amidst discussions regarding the future role of Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the PKK, sources have clarified that he will not hold any official position in this transitional period. Ocalan’s role has transitioned towards facilitating the dissolution of the organization, a process that began in earnest in May 2025. Contrary to some speculation, the conditions of his confinement do not include any lavish accommodations, as he is restricted to a modest space on Imrali island.

The PKK/KCK’s recent withdrawals from their fortified positions represent a pivotal shift in counter-terrorism strategy in the region. As the focus now shifts to the fate of the group’s leaders, the role of both Iraq and Turkey will be critical in ensuring lasting stability and security in the affected areas.
