JNF Greenlights NIS 33 Million Infrastructure Initiative for 22 Northern Border Communities

On Tuesday, the Board of Directors of the Jewish National Fund (JNF) announced a significant budget allocation of NIS 33 million to assist 22 communities located near the northern border of Israel, specifically within a range of 2 to 5 kilometers from Lebanon. This initiative underscores JNF’s commitment to infrastructural rehabilitation and development in these areas, which have borne the brunt of conflict.

Support for Affected Communities

Each of the communities that had to evacuate during recent conflicts and have yet to receive support will benefit from the allocation of NIS 1.5 million directed at infrastructure improvements. Communities such as Kibbutz Ma’ayan Baruch and Kibbutz Dan, situated within the Upper Galilee Regional Council, are among those set to gain from this funding. Other beneficiaries include Beit Hillel, Ramot Naftali, as well as towns in the Mevo’ot HaHermon, Mateh Asher, and Merom HaGalil regional councils.

Gradual Allocation Based on Need

Importantly, the funding model employed by JNF diverges from the government’s standardized approach. Rather than offering uniform relief, JNF uses a tiered model that assesses both the distance from the Lebanese border and the extent of damage. Front-line communities like Kibbutz Manara and Moshav Dovev could receive between NIS 2.5 to 3 million each due to their proximity and level of impact. This current support phase is designed for communities located 2 to 5 kilometers from the border, while a subsequent phase aims to allocate around NIS 1 million to communities situated 5 to 9 kilometers away.

Focus on Community Development

Allocated funds will be dedicated to various developmental needs, including the upgrading and fortification of vital public infrastructure such as kindergartens, community centers, and dining halls. Local residents and community leaders will have the autonomy to choose specific projects that align with their unique needs, empowering them to drive local decisions.

Implementation and Future Plans

JNF’s professional teams are scheduled to visit these communities shortly for a comprehensive assessment aimed at formulating a detailed project list. The execution of these initiatives is expected to kick off within approximately six weeks. This effort aligns with ongoing investments by JNF in northern towns and regional centers, which also include approximately NIS 35 million directed toward cities like Tiberias, Karmiel, Afula, and Beit She’an.

Amid these developments, JNF Chairman Eyal Ostrinsky emphasized the necessity of continuing support beyond the immediate vicinity of the border. He highlighted that communities within a 5-kilometer radius also suffered extensively during the conflict and deserve comprehensive assistance.

Overall, the Moshavim Movement expressed its approval, affirming JNF’s role as a vital ally to rural communities. Their support will aim to strengthen the resilience of not just individual communities, but the national fabric of Israel, highlighting the importance of these border areas in ensuring national stability and security.
