Western countries criticize Israel for its settlements in the West Bank and violence from settlers.

On Friday, a coalition of several countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, released a joint statement criticizing Israel’s actions in the West Bank. The governments underscored their concerns regarding Israel’s policies and the mounting instances of violence from settlers towards Palestinians.

Condemnation of Israeli Settlements

In their statement, these countries asserted that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal and contravene international law. They pointed out that the legality of settlements is well established and should be respected. Specifically, the statement highlighted that construction projects in areas like E1 would disrupt the West Bank’s geography and exacerbate tensions further.

Warning to Businesses Over E1 Projects

The nations cautioned that any businesses contemplating involvement in the E1 project could face both legal and reputational repercussions. This initiative aims to establish around 3,400 housing units within existing Israeli settlements, a move viewed as highly contentious and potentially damaging to efforts for a peaceful resolution in the region.

Urgent Calls for Change

The statement urged the Israeli government to cease further expansion of settlements and revoke the administrative powers that facilitate such actions in the West Bank. In addition, the document called for accountability concerning incidents of violence perpetrated by settlers against Palestinians. It emphasized the need for thorough investigations into allegations against Israeli forces, coherent respect for the custodial rights over Jerusalem’s holy sites, and financial support for the Palestinian Authority and its economy.

Support for a Two-State Solution

Lastly, the coalition expressed their unwavering commitment to a viable two-state solution, envisioning a scenario where both Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully as democratic states. The call for these two nations to live side by side in secure and recognized borders reflects a concerted effort to advocate for a lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic engagement and compromise.
