Israel’s Human Destruction Force – The Atlantic

On Wednesday, Israeli forces halted a protest flotilla attempting to reach Gaza and subsequently transported the participants to an Israeli port. Following this event, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s minister of national security, shared a video on social media. In the clip, this far-right politician mocks the detained individuals with nationalistic chants while the handcuffed protesters are made to kneel. One activist cries out, “Free Palestine!” only to be shoved to the ground by security officers. Ben-Gvir claimed, “This is how we receive supporters of terror,” highlighting his confrontational stance.

### Provocations and Political Implications

Ben-Gvir’s audacious behavior has confirmed what many Israelis have feared: his presence is not just a concern for those on the political left but essentially serves as a boon for Israel’s adversaries. His actions provide ammunition to those who argue that Israel embodies aggression in its conflict with groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Unintentionally, he aids these organizations and hostile nations by validating their narratives against Israel. Notably, the activists involved in the flotilla had intended to provoke Israeli authorities, but they likely did not anticipate such an overt display of humiliation from a high-ranking official. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tepid response can also be seen as an endorsement of Ben-Gvir’s methods.

### Shift in Political Landscape

Back in February 2021, just before parliamentary elections, Netanyahu labeled Ben-Gvir as “unfit” for any ministerial role, asserting that his views did not align with his own. However, following Netanyahu’s return to power in November 2022, he reversed course and appointed Ben-Gvir to his cabinet. What once seemed an extreme decision has revealed itself to be significantly more damaging than anyone could have foreseen. Appointing Ben-Gvir to oversee the police and prison services resembles placing an arsonist in charge of firefighting services.

### A History of Extremism

Ben-Gvir’s background as a politician is marked by extremism. He has been convicted of several offenses, including incitement to racism and support for terrorist organizations. Grown from humble beginnings in a secular Iraqi Jewish household, he adopted a more radical religious identity by adolescence. His political journey began with the Kach movement, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, and he gained notoriety in 1995 by publicly threatening then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, shortly before Rabin was assassinated.

### Current Policies and Consequences

Since Ben-Gvir’s appointment, the implications for Israeli society have been alarming. Under his influence, the police have increasingly targeted left-wing activists while bolstering far-right groups—often at the expense of public safety. The country has witnessed a rise in violence, including a spike in settler aggression against Palestinian citizens, with the law enforcement agency reportedly ignoring such acts. Over the past year, Israel has seen an alarming increase in murder rates and youth violence.

### Netanyahu’s Complicity

As the violence escalates, Netanyahu remains silent, prioritizing political convenience over moral responsibility. Even after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, incursion—and the subsequent kidnapping of over 250 individuals—Ben-Gvir enacted policies that worsened the conditions of Palestinian prisoners. Warnings from high-ranking officials about the potentially harmful impact on Israeli hostages were disregarded. When some hostages were eventually released, many reported they had endured brutal treatment, alluded to as being a consequence of Ben-Gvir’s actions.

### Conclusion: A Deteriorating Democracy

In any healthy democracy, a leader would act decisively against a minister like Ben-Gvir. In a different era, such a figure would never have been allowed near governance. Ben-Gvir’s rise to power reflects a troubling trend in Israeli politics, showcasing Netanyahu’s prioritization of political survival over the nation’s wellbeing. The ongoing ramifications suggest that Ben-Gvir is likely to pursue his divisive agenda, further polarizing an already tense societal atmosphere.
