OPS identifies industries to boost UAE investment opportunities.

Nigerian business leaders have spotlighted key sectors—specifically port decongestion, logistics, and economic zones—that could greatly benefit from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) increasing its investment in Nigeria. These leaders stress that the UAE should transform its growing interest in the country into substantial, long-term investments in productive sectors, which could lead to substantial economic benefits.

UAE’s Investment Initiatives in Nigeria

The UAE has shown strong intent to invest in Nigeria through various public engagements. A recent notable event was the visit of Humphrey Onyima, Special Adviser to the Governor of Enugu State, to the UAE Embassy in Abuja, with the goal of establishing an Enugu State-UAE Investment Corridor. This initiative could pave the way for deeper economic ties that leverage mutual benefits.

In terms of numbers, a report from The PUNCH highlighted that Nigeria’s capital imports from the UAE saw an impressive increase of 87.8 percent, climbing to $728.81 million in 2025, a notable rise from $388.01 million in 2024, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics. Notably, the UAE has committed over $71.32 billion in investments across Sub-Saharan Africa between 2021 and 2025, signifying a robust interest in the region.

Identifying Key Sectors for Investment

Leaders from Nigeria’s organized private sector believe that the most substantial impact from UAE investments could occur in ports, logistics, and economic zones. Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, the First Deputy President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that the UAE has valuable expertise in port management that could significantly benefit Nigeria. Inefficient inland logistics and port congestion currently inflating business costs in Nigeria stand to be alleviated through such investments.

Adesugba pointed out that Nigeria’s free trade zones could serve as an attractive entry point for Gulf investors, offering the incentives and speedy setups they typically seek. However, he urged caution, emphasizing the need to look beyond surface-level figures surrounding capital importation to understand the intentions behind these investments fully.

Long-term Economic Viability and Potential Challenges

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the 87.8 percent rise in capital importation, experts highlight the need to consider what lies beneath these statistics. Adesugba cautioned that a significant portion of these numbers is often driven by portfolio flows and loans, which can be volatile. The primary concern remains whether Nigeria can transition UAE interest into stable, direct investments in sectors that can produce tangible economic benefits.

While sectors like financial services and real estate continue to attract Gulf investments, Adesugba noted that these areas alone might not yield substantial developmental impact unless funding is directed towards critical infrastructure, housing finance, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Dr. Femi Egbesola, President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, indicated that investment from the UAE could make a significant difference in manufacturing and renewable energy. Egbesola believes these sectors have the potential to tackle critical challenges facing Nigerian businesses, such as high energy costs and inefficient supply chains.

As the UAE identifies renewable energy, infrastructure, and digital innovation as key areas for investment in Africa, Nigeria’s participation in international forums, like the Middle East Energy 2026 conference in Dubai, emphasizes the need for a clear strategy to attract funding for crucial electricity infrastructure.

In summary, while there’s a burgeoning interest from the UAE in investing in Nigeria, translating this interest into sustainable outcomes requires careful planning and a focus on projects that promise long-term viability. If Nigeria can successfully tap into the substantial funds available, it stands to gain immensely in addressing infrastructural challenges, thereby enhancing its economic landscape.
