Benjamin Netanyahu: Iran and its proxies could disrupt Israeli elections; warns of potential military response.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently sounded the alarm over potential Iranian interference in Israel’s upcoming elections during an interview with The Jerusalem Post. He emphasized that both military intelligence and the Mossad have indicated that Iran and its affiliates might be plotting to sway the electoral outcome.

Warnings from Intelligence Services

Netanyahu firmly stated, “We have clear warnings from military intelligence and the Mossad regarding Iran and its proxies considering ways to influence the elections.” He cautioned that, should these planning efforts come to fruition, Iran would face significant repercussions. “It’ll be a big mistake for them,” he declared, asserting that Israel would respond with a degree of force that Iran cannot fathom.

Expanding on the threat, Netanyahu noted that Iran could aim to undermine public confidence in Israel’s security through orchestrated attacks. Such actions would be designed to demonstrate that Israel’s military successes have not fundamentally altered the balance of power in the region. “We’ve had an amazing success story,” he stated, referring to Israel’s evolution since the devastating events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive assault.

Israel’s Strategic Position

The prime minister reiterated Israel’s emergence as a dominant force in the Middle East, proclaiming, “We’ve gone from being vulnerable to being the most powerful nation in the region.” According to Netanyahu, while Israel has completed around 90% of its mission against Iran and its affiliates, the remaining challenge lies in thwarting Iran’s attempts to rebuild its military capabilities.

He underscored the notion that Iran’s nuclear ambitions pose a critical security threat to Israel. Netanyahu emphasized that prior military operations have addressed immediate dangers but not the overarching challenge of Iran’s nuclear program. “About a year ago, Iran was on the cusp of developing several atomic bombs,” he warned. He stressed that without intervention from Israel, this threat would have materialized.

Identifying the Adversaries

The prime minister described the upcoming election as a vital strategic battle, naming several individuals and groups he believes wish to see him defeated, including Iranian leaders, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Netanyahu asserted, “All the enemies of Israel want me to lose,” framing the election outcome as pivotal for the country’s security landscape.

Moreover, Netanyahu claimed that Iran has ambitions to acquire 20,000 ballistic missiles, characterizing this arsenal as an existential menace to Israel. Although he estimated that Iran has over 1,000 missiles already, the overall assessment from military intelligence suggests that Iran’s missile stockpile may amount to around 1,600.

Coordinated Strategies Against Iran

When discussing future military collaboration, Netanyahu expressed confidence that he and U.S. President Donald Trump are aligned in understanding the stakes involved. Although he did not disclose which specific targets could be involved in any new operations against Iran, he affirmed that as long as the current Iranian regime is in place, it will continue its attempts to rebuild its nuclear program and missile capabilities.

In the face of these challenges, Netanyahu concluded by hinting at potential future operations, teasing names akin to previous campaigns that reference lions. “We’re dealing with lions,” he remarked, indicating the seriousness of the situations Israel faces.

This interview serves as a crucial reflection on the geopolitical tensions involving Israel and its foes, emphasizing the high-stakes nature of the upcoming elections and the potential threats posed by Iran and its proxies.
