President El-Sisi: Egyptian Military Aid to Saudi Arabia Will Exclude Offensive Actions in Yemen

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently stated that any military assistance Egypt might offer to Saudi Arabia would be strictly defensive. This clarification comes as Egypt contemplates a role in the conflict against the Iran-aligned Houthi militia in Yemen. El-Sisi emphasized that support would not include offensive operations against Yemen.

Support Limited to Defensive Actions

El-Sisi expressed readiness to aid Arab nations in protecting their territorial integrity but stressed that military actions would remain confined to the borders of Egypt or its neighboring Arab states. His comments follow a recent postponement by the Egyptian parliament of a decision regarding military assistance to Saudi Arabia, now set for a vote on October 26. The debated measures would grant El-Sisi the authority to approve defensive assistance if requested by Riyadh. Per Egypt’s Constitution, deploying armed forces for combat missions abroad necessitates consultations with the National Defense Council and a two-thirds majority parliamentary approval.

Commitment to Arab National Security

Reinforcing Egypt’s stance, El-Sisi articulated that the security of Gulf states is inherently linked to Egypt’s national security. He described Arab national security as an indivisible concept and highlighted the importance of regional stability for Egypt’s wellbeing. While reaffirming Egypt’s longstanding foreign policy principles, El-Sisi emphasized non-interference in other nations’ affairs and a commitment to preserving national institutions and avoiding engagement with armed militias.

A Call for Stability in the Region

El-Sisi underscored the need for stability throughout the Arab world, particularly in regions like Sudan, Libya, and Somalia. His remarks signal Cairo’s dedication to a unified approach toward collective Arab security while facing increasing threats. The recent surge in Houthi missile and drone assaults on Saudi Arabia underscores the urgency for regional cooperation, especially after deadly attacks on critical infrastructure, such as King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, that have resulted in civilian casualties and disrupted air travel.

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty further emphasized during the Egypt Forum 2026 that Cairo is actively collaborating with Red Sea nations to bolster regional security through economic and developmental partnerships. This initiative underscores the importance of cooperative efforts in enhancing maritime security and protecting vital shipping routes, crucial for international trade.

In summary, while Egypt remains open to providing defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia, it has firmly established that such support will not extend beyond protective measures against attacks on Arab nations. As tensions rise in the region, Egypt’s leadership is actively working toward collective security, emphasizing a unified Arab front against rising threats. This strategic focus not only prioritizes national security but also aims to foster stability and development throughout the region.
