The enigma surrounding the construction of Egypt’s Great Pyramid may be on the verge of resolution. For years, scholars have grappled with the question of how ancient laborers managed to elevate and position millions of massive stone blocks, some weighing as much as 15 tons, without the aid of contemporary machinery. Without any historical documents to guide them, the mystery seemed insurmountable.

The Hidden Spiral Ramp: A Possible Solution

Recent research offers a groundbreaking perspective, suggesting the existence of a hidden spiral ramp within the Pyramid of Khufu. This innovative theory posits that an “edge ramp” was utilized by workers, allowing for a sloped path along the pyramid’s outer edges as new layers were added. According to computer scientist Vicente Luis Rosell Roig, this method would have enabled the workers to gradually move the heavy stones to their proper positions without requiring vast external ramps.

Using this approach not only streamlined the construction process but also significantly reduced the physical space needed for large ramps. The Great Pyramid stands at a staggering 481 feet tall and stretches 755 feet along each side of its base, composed of approximately 2.3 million stone blocks. This remarkable achievement in ancient engineering truly evokes awe and exhaustion just to consider.

The Duration of Construction: Insights from Simulations

How long would it have taken to complete this monumental structure? The study involved simulations that suggest each block may have been placed roughly every four to six minutes. With this pace, it is projected that the pyramid could have been completed in about 14 to 21 years. However, this estimate does not take into account various logistical factors such as quarrying, transporting the stones, and necessary breaks for the workers. When these considerations are included, the timeframe shifts to an estimated 20 to 27 years, aligning closely with existing historical estimates.

The presence of this hidden ramp could also shed light on the vacant spaces identified within the pyramid, as remnants of the ramp may still be intact.

The Logistical Challenges of Ancient Builders

Despite this new theory, questions linger regarding the logistical capabilities of the ancient builders. They constructed such monumental and precise structures without advanced technology, which raises issues about their techniques and tools. As Rosell Roig noted in a research study published in NPJ Heritage Science, the technology available during Egypt’s Old Kingdom consisted of tools like copper chisels, water-lubricated sledges, ropes, levers, and Nile barges. There were no iron tools or wheeled transport systems to leverage, making the construction feat even more extraordinary.

Researchers are now focused on exploring how the ancient Egyptians navigated these challenges to produce engineering marvels like the Great Pyramid. While the spiral ramp theory provides valuable insights, the quest to fully comprehend how these monuments were built continues.
