Badawi and TotalEnergies Explore Fast-Tracking Cyprus Gas Connection Project

Egypt is actively working on enhancing its energy infrastructure by connecting Cypriot natural gas to its network and expanding its partnership with TotalEnergies. This initiative aims to further develop exploration, production, and investment opportunities in the Mediterranean, according to Karim Badawi, the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

Accelerating Gas Infrastructure Projects

During a meeting with Julien Pouget, the President for Exploration and Production at TotalEnergies for North Africa and the Middle East, Badawi highlighted the ongoing efforts to advance key gas projects. Their discussions took place at the Mediterranean Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition (MOC 2026) in Alexandria, aiming at integrating Cyprus’ Cronos gas field into Egypt’s existing energy systems. This ambition comes as part of a broader strategy to leverage regional resources effectively.

The Cronos field, a significant offshore discovery jointly operated by TotalEnergies and Italy’s Eni, is estimated to hold approximately 3 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas. Expected to begin production by 2028, this resource will be transported to Egyptian facilities, particularly the Zohr gas plant, and then converted into liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Damietta facility for international distribution, primarily targeting European markets.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The talks also focused on the strategic connection between Cyprus’ gas field and Egypt’s infrastructure, along with boosting investments in local gas exploration and production. Badawi pointed out that strong political support from both Egypt and Cyprus has accelerated the Cronos project, facilitating coordination among stakeholders. This cooperation is crucial for overcoming potential challenges and ensuring a timely project implementation.

At the conference, a noteworthy financial framework agreement was signed between the petroleum ministry and Chevron, aiming to link Cyprus’ Aphrodite gas field to the Egyptian network. This agreement symbolizes yet another significant step toward enhancing cross-border energy ties.

Investment Opportunities with TotalEnergies

During their discussions, Badawi also expressed Egypt’s keen interest in attracting further investments from TotalEnergies into the nation’s natural gas sector. This reflects Egypt’s desire to remain a key player in the Mediterranean energy landscape. Pouget reiterated TotalEnergies’ commitment to collaboration with the Egyptian petroleum ministry, emphasizing the company’s ongoing evaluations of promising exploration possibilities within the region.

He mentioned that gaining access to additional technical data and information would greatly enhance the evaluation of these exploration prospects. Such collaboration could lead to significant advancements in both nations’ energy strategies.

In summary, Egypt’s proactive steps in enhancing its energy infrastructure and extending its natural gas resources reflect a commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development in the gas sector. The partnerships forged with international companies like TotalEnergies and Chevron are vital for realizing these ambitious energy goals. As projects like the Cronos and Aphrodite gas fields progress, they will play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy in the Mediterranean region.
