EBRD secures 5 million financing for 1.2GW Nefer Minya initiative in Egypt

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is set to support the Nefer Minya solar power project in Egypt with a substantial financing package totaling up to $265 million (€236.1 million). This ambitious initiative aims to construct a 1.2GW solar facility, featuring a state-of-the-art 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a significant step forward in renewable energy development within the country.

Financial Composition of the Nefer Minya Project

The financial arrangement for this solar power project, coordinated by the EBRD, includes a $160 million loan sourced from the bank’s own funds. Additionally, a $75 million portion has been mobilized through the Bank of Jordan, while the Clean Technology Fund contributes up to $30 million in concessional support as part of its Global Energy Storage Program. Companies Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy operate as the owners of Nefer Minya for Renewable Energy S.A.E., the dedicated vehicle for this venture.

In total, the project’s debt financing has reached approximately $566 million, with assistance from prominent international funding institutions including Germany’s DEG, Proparco from France, and the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank. This financial foundation is crucial for the construction and operation of a solar power facility that stands to be Egypt’s first large-scale project combining solar energy generation and battery storage.

Technological Advancements and Environmental Impact

The implementation of the 600MWh battery storage system is particularly noteworthy. It is designed to store solar energy generated during the day, which will be utilized during peak evening hours. This technology enhances the stability and reliability of the grid, addressing common challenges associated with renewable energy sources that rely on variable sunlight. The energy produced by the Nefer Minya project will be sold to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The project is expected to provide power for over 1.4 million households and will play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions, projected to avoid exceeding 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This aligns well with global efforts to combat climate change and underscores Egypt’s commitment to transitioning toward renewable energy sources.

Strategic Significance and Future Prospects

The EBRD’s investment is positioned within its Energy Pillar initiative, part of Egypt’s broader Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy strategy, which was introduced at COP27. This initiative aims to facilitate the development of 10GW in renewable energy capacity within the private sector while simultaneously reducing reliance on inefficient fossil fuel generation by 5GW.

According to EBRD’s Middle East and Africa sustainable infrastructure director, Aida Sitdikova, the financing of the Nefer Minya project represents a landmark achievement, as it combines solar energy generation with utility-scale battery storage, the largest project of its kind in Egypt and Africa thus far. The collaboration between EBRD, Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Utilities emphasizes a shared commitment to enhancing the nation’s energy security and fortifying grid resilience.

By pioneering such projects, Egypt is taking significant strides towards achieving its ambitious energy transition goals, demonstrating the potential for large-scale renewable energy development to shape the nation’s sustainable future.
